  • Italy - Avian flu: an outbreak in Cremona area and one on the Brescia border

An outbreak of avian influenza has been confirmed in a turkey farm in Casale Cremasco-Vidolasco. The alarm went off on Saturday 25 October, after a sudden death of about fifty turkeys had been reported. The analyzes conducted by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of the Venezie, Padua office, confirmed on Monday 27 the positivity to the avian virus. Immediately, the health authorities ordered the slaughter of all the animals present in the structure, about 60,000 turkeys.

The abatement and disposal operations, coordinated by the veterinary services of the ATS Val Padana, are still in progress. A protection zone with a radius of 3 kilometers has been established around the farm, within which any movement of animals is prohibited.

The measure was also adopted in consideration of other outbreaks reported in neighboring areas: one in the Lodi area, under the jurisdiction of the ATS Milan, and another even more recent in the municipality of Seniga, in the province of Brescia, a town bordering the province of Cremona.

Although there are no other direct cases on the provincial territory so far, the veterinary authorities have extended the containment measures. The territories of Scandolara Ripa d'Oglio and Gabbioneta Binanuova are therefore part of the protection zone (radius of 3km from the Seniga outbreak). On the other hand, the territories of Robecco, Corte de' Frati, Grontardo, Pescarolo, Ostiano and partly those of Persico Dosimo, Gadesco Pieve Delmona, Vescovato, Cicognolo, Pessina are involved in the surveillance area (within a radius of 10km from the outbreak).
