  • Healthy birds exterminated in bird flu drill

The Agricultural Authority of Iceland organized a drill for how to react to bird flu by exterminating 2,500 healthy birds at the poultry farm Miklaholtshellir near Selfoss, south Iceland, yesterday.
?These birds were supposed to be killed anyway, so we used the opportunity and turned it into a drill. The extermination was conducted with commonly used substances and was successful,? senior veterinarian Halld?r R?n?lfsson told Fr?ttabladid.
The drill began with a meeting at the Agricultural Authority in Selfoss yesterday morning. Then the participants drove to the poultry farm and the birds were exterminated with carbon dioxide (CO2) and buried west of Selfoss.
Afterwards representatives from the Work Supervision Authority, the Disease Prevention Authority and the Institute for Experimental Pathology of the University of Iceland reviewed the methods and equipment used in the drill.
The drill was considered successful, though participants need more experience in how to use disease prevention equipment.
?These practices are organized to see how this would work in reality and find out whether there are any flaws in the execution of the plan. The participants are experts in various fields and they had several useful comments,? Run?lfsson said.
Several veterinarians and institutions across Iceland participated in the drill, 40 individuals in total. The drill was organized by Audur Lilja Arnth?rsd?ttir, a veterinarian who specializes in disease prevention. http://www.icelandreview.com/iceland..._0_a_id=278568
