Nébih: Avian influenza has appeared in wild birds in Hungary

The H5N1 subtype of the bird flu virus has been detected by the laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) in a wild bird found dead in Baranya County, the National Food Chain Safety Office said on Friday.

Poultry keepers have been called upon to take greater care to protect their animals and prevent them from coming into contact with wild birds.

The infected wild bird was found near a fishpond in Sumony, they said. From the point of view of avian influenza, larger, contiguous wetlands are particularly at risk, as they are popular resting places for wild birds.

According to the agency, the re-emergence of the pathogen in Hungary can be related to the autumn migrations of wild birds, as the migration routes cross the entire country.

Nébih underlined that minimizing the possibility of poultry and wild birds meeting in the control of bird flu is paramount. Strict adherence to disease control regulations is essential. The animals should be fed and watered in a place completely protected from wild birds, preferably enclosed from the side. Feed and litter should also be kept in a closed, covered place and kept away from foreign animals during storage, they emphasized.

The case must also be reported to the EU and third countries, but trade restrictions will not come into force in the event of a wild bird infection, Nébih informed. According to the agency, the tightening of domestic regulations is not expected for the time being, however, experts are constantly analyzing the epidemiological situation.

H5N1: The Helikon Castle Museum suffered a huge loss
Due to the bird flu detected in the dead birds, the entire population of the bird park of the Helikon Castle Museum in Keszthely had to be liquidated, the institution said.
      Péter Szász, Wednesday, December 1, 2021, 15:01

The staff of the bird park recently became aware of the unexpected death of the animals, so the institution closed the affected area with immediate effect and reported the case to the authority. From the samples, the laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Authority (Nébih) confirmed the presence of the H5N1 subtype of avian influenza virus in each case, writes MTI.

To prevent the disease from spreading, veterinary experts have eradicated the entire bird population in the park. In order to take the necessary precautions, the palm house and bird park of the Festetics Castle in Keszthely will be kept closed to visitors until 31 December.

It is also a huge loss for the institution and its visitors, as the colorful, unique and rare bird population gave a special experience to the guests, especially the families. The Helikon Castle Museum will do its utmost to reopen the bird park in 2022.

In connection with the case, Nébih wrote on its website last week that 380 wild birds of different species were kept in the bird park. Much of the area is covered with bird nets, but the lake system there is a popular resting place for wild mallards, so the severity of the wild bird's role in transmitting infections is also confirmed by this case.

The pelicans of the capital's zoo have been quarantined

57 pelicans and 46 other waterfowl of the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden have been quarantined, which is why they cannot be seen by the general public.

The reason for the emergency measure is the presence of the H5N1 subtype virus, which is responsible for bird flu, from two dead pelicans, the zoo informed MTI on Friday.

The virus, which is spread primarily by wild, migratory waterfowl, was most likely introduced by wild birds visiting Lake Zoo.

The experts of the city park institution immediately notified the competent authorities, and a decision was made on the necessary measures on the basis of an on-site inspection carried out jointly with Nébih's staff.

The 103 individuals concerned were individually captured and examined by specialists from the capital zoo and Nébih after special preparations. They were then quarantined in a part of the zoo that was not accessible to the public, where it was possible to separate the animals in small groups.

None of the samples taken from the birds could detect the virus, so there are indications that the rapid spread of the virus has been stopped so far, the report said.

The measures affect the usual arrangements for visits to the zoo to the extent that the roses and ferrets, as well as the inhabitants of the pond near the Crocodile House and the pond of the black swans, are temporarily not visible to the general public.
