12:58 | Friday 10 December 2021
Authorities in Evros received a red alert, a case of H5N1 bird flu was detected. Recommendations to poultry farmers and citizens.
A semi-dumb swan, found in the Evros delta, was detected three days ago by the avian influenza virus type (subtype H5N1), according to a circular of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, cited by an announcement of the Veterinary Directorate of Veterinary Medicine. Of Macedonia.
The Region points out that in the immediate future the pathogenicity of the virus will be precisely determined, however it is estimated that it is a strain of high pathogenicity. This finding, moreover, demonstrates the circulation of avian influenza viruses in the country's wild birds and the increased risk of infection of farmed poultry in the current period.
For this reason, the Region emphasizes that attention should be paid to the faithful implementation of biosecurity measures, which include, inter alia, the prohibition of keeping poultry (domestic, free range, organic farming, etc.) in open farms in areas of the country where are located at a distance of less than 2 km from wetlands, rivers, lakes and all kinds of water catchments and in non-fenced areas throughout the country.
In fact, according to the latest circular of the Ministry, even when the incarceration of poultry is not mandatory, it is recommended to keep them indoors, at least until the end of April.
Given the seriousness of the situation, poultry farmers and owners of domestic poultry must immediately proceed with the implementation of all mandatory measures and the adoption of any recommendations by the competent veterinary services. At the same time, it is reminded that in cases of increased morbidity or mortality of poultry, their owners are obliged to immediately inform the veterinary authorities to obtain the necessary samples.
For their part, citizens should avoid contact with dead or sick wild birds in the field and in case of finding dead or half-dead birds should inform those responsible for their collection and sending samples to the competent laboratory.
