Avian influenza: Infected animals found in poultry farmers in the western district of Augsburg
Bird flu virus found in private animal husbandry

On Tuesday, January 18, the veterinary office of the district of Augsburg received confirmation from the Friedrich Loeffler Institute that the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAIV) of subtype H5N1, the causative agent of avian influenza, had been detected. This is the first case of avian influenza in a domestic poultry farm in the Augsburg region. A hobby poultry farm in the western district is affected. Within a few days, more deaths occurred in the animal population, and three quarters of the total number of poultry died. One of the animals was sent to a laboratory for testing. It is suspected that the viruses entered the country via wild birds. Purchases did not take place.

Poultry farming was immediately blocked by the veterinary office and all necessary animal health measures were initiated...

Another case of avian influenza - chicken population in the Havelland district affected

The avian influenza pathogen H5N1 (bird flu/avian influenza) has been detected in a small farm in the Havelland district. It is the fifth case of avian influenza in a poultry farm in the state of Brandenburg within a few weeks.

Increased losses had occurred in hobby keeping with around ten chickens. The avian influenza virus of subtype H5N1 was detected by the Berlin Brandenburg State Laboratory and confirmed today by the national reference laboratory, the Friedrich Loeffler Institute.

The veterinary office of the district concerned has ordered the steps provided for in the avian influenza ordinance. This includes the establishment of a protection zone of at least three kilometers radius and a surveillance zone of at least ten kilometers radius around the outbreak stock. The exact borders of the mentioned restricted areas are determined by the competent veterinary office. The affected poultry farmers will be informed about the necessary measures by the district. In the areas there are restrictions on poultry farming, such as the ban on moving poultry and certain animal products and the obligation to keep domestic poultry.

The Ministry of Consumer Protection urgently appeals to poultry farmers to strictly comply with all biosecurity measures and to consistently observe the stall obligation that has been in force in risk areas since January 8, 2022. The risk of avian influenza entering poultry farms is still considered very high by the FLI.

Bird flu has arrived in Dortmund – stalls are compulsory in neighboring towns

            January 28, 2022

Dortmund/Witten/Herdecke. On Thursday, January 27th, the outbreak of avian influenza (highly pathogenic virus H5N1) / bird flu was officially declared. A private bird sanctuary in Dortmund Dorstfeld, which has been operated with great commitment for a long time, is affected. Around 100 birds of all kinds are currently kept there. Everyone involved is very concerned about the fact that bird flu has broken out there. The clearing of the entire bird population is now pending.

Unfortunately, the wave of bird flu is far from over in Germany. In retrospect, according to current estimates by the Friedrich Löffler Institute, Europe experienced the most severe bird flu epidemic to date between autumn 2020 and spring 2021. In the summer months that followed, the bird flu pathogen was again and again detected in wild birds.

In North Rhine-Westphalia there have been 22 outbreaks of avian influenza in kept poultry (chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese) in the last twelve months. Districts in East Westphalia were particularly affected, but also neighboring districts in the rest of Westphalia and on the Lower Rhine. In 29 cases, the bird flu virus was found dead in wild birds (wild geese, ducks, swans, herons, owls and birds of prey). In addition, there are increasing reports of the death of wild birds in large numbers from other European countries and more distant countries, e.g. E.g. Israel...

                    Bird flu detected in Spahnharrenstätte
                    Published 3 hours ago

                    By Fabian Brand

Spahnharrenstätte. The highly pathogenic influenza A virus of subtype H5N1 has been detected in a broiler flock in the municipality of Spahnharrenstätte (joint municipality of Sögel). The district of Emsland will now implement the appropriate measures to clear the stock and kill the chickens in accordance with animal welfare. Around 90,000 animals are affected. The facility is then cleaned and disinfected.

The infection was initially detected in the affected livestock during self-checks before official samples confirmed this suspicion.

If bird flu has been officially detected in a company, restriction zones must be set up. These consist of a protection zone (formerly restricted area) with a radius of at least 3 km around the eruption site and a surveillance zone (formerly observation area) of at least 10 km around the eruption site.

A total of 278 farms, including 172 commercial farms, with a total of over 5.15 million poultry are affected by the restriction zones (protection and surveillance zone) now determined by the Emsland district in a general decree issued by the animal health authorities...

...At the beginning of January, around 35,600 poultry had to be culled in a farm in the municipality of Lähden (joint municipality of Herzlake) due to an outbreak of bird flu...

According to current knowledge, the virus is largely harmless to humans.

The general animal health decree, including the depiction of the restriction zones, will be published on the homepage of the Emsland district at www.emsland.de from the beginning of the week (week 7).

The state laboratory of the State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES) has detected the AI virus H5. The result of the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI) on the serotype is still pending.

The district with a suspected operation set up a restricted zone, consisting of the protection zone (formerly restricted area) with a radius of at least 3 km and the surveillance zone (formerly observation area) with a radius of at least 10 km.

The killing of the livestock was ordered. The district of Cloppenburg is preparing the corresponding general decrees. These are expected to come into effect on Thursday, February 17, 2022 at 00:00.

If the suspicion of the highly pathogenic variant of avian influenza is confirmed, the district will set up a 25 km radius ban on reintroducing turkeys.

Due to the proximity to the district of Oldenburg, there will be a connection surveillance zone there. The communities of Wardenburg and Grossenkneten are affected.

Current situation in Lower Saxony's poultry farms
The Lower Saxony State Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (LAVES) has announced that the avian influenza virus of the HPAI H5N1 subtype has been detected in 21 poultry farms since November 10, 2021.

In addition to turkey fattening farms in the districts of Ammerland, Cloppenburg, Oldenburg, Osnabrück, Vechta and Wesermarsch, duck fattening farms, laying hen, turkey and goose breeder farms and hobby farms throughout Lower Saxony are also affected. Stocks have been cleared.

On February 11, 2022, HPAI H5N1 was detected in a broiler farm in the Emsland district. The districts affected have set up protection and surveillance zones.

Since November, the low-pathogen avian influenza virus (LPAI) has been detected in 3 poultry farms in the districts of Emsland, Cloppenburg and Cuxhaven. Duck, geese and turkey stocks were affected. The stocks were cleared, and in some cases it was possible to send the animals to immediate slaughter.
                          HPAI outbreaks in Germany

After the nationwide outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) calmed down in the summer of 2021, the first outbreak of avian influenza after 3 months in a kept bird was reported on October 21, 2021. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, HPAI H5N1 was detected in a dead stork in a zoo in Greifswald.

Since then there have been a total of 65 outbreaks of avian influenza with the subtype HPAI H5N1. In the affected federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Brandenburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saxony-Anhalt, Saarland, Schleswig-Holstein and Thuringia, in addition to hobby poultry farmers and a zoo, there were also commercial turkey, Goose, duck and chicken farms affected.

                          HPAI situation in Europe

Over the summer, mainly northern European countries reported isolated cases of avian influenza in wild birds from geese and duck breeding regions. HPAI viruses were recently reported in wild birds from Germany, Finland, France, the Netherlands, Russia and Sweden.

The year-round detection of HPAI viruses in Europe suggests an endemic establishment of these HPAI viruses.
                          Mass extinction of wild birds

Since October 2021, reports of HPAIV-H5 cases in wild birds in Europe have been increasing. Reports of mass deaths of geese, swans, waders and cranes were published from France, England, the Netherlands and Israel during December 2021. For example, 4,000 red knots have been found dead in the Netherlands and an estimated 10% of the barnacle goose population has died on the west coast of England.

Since October 1st, 2021, more than 750 HPAI-H5 outbreaks in poultry and kept birds have been detected in Europe from 23 countries.

Italy is hardest hit with over 300 outbreaks, with turkey fattening farms, broiler fattening farms and laying hen farms being the most infected. But Hungary, Poland, the United Kingdom and France are also reporting drastic outbreaks with millions of poultry affected.
