First case of avian influenza in SH this fall
    Status: 16.10.2021 2:07 p.m.

In Schleswig-Holstein, after a break of several months, a new case of avian influenza has been confirmed.

The H5N1 subtype pathogen was found in a wild bird in the North Friesland district, the Ministry of Agriculture announced on Saturday in Kiel. The sick wigeon is the first evidence of avian influenza in Schleswig-Holstein since mid-June.
    More dead birds found

In addition, other dead birds were found in small numbers and locally limited. Samples were also taken from them for further investigations at the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI). Further evidence is therefore possible, it said. Poultry farmers are asked to protect their animals from avian influenza. Caution should be exercised when buying animals, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

    Schleswig-Holstein was particularly hard hit

Avian influenza, also known as avian flu, is an infectious disease that occurs primarily in waterfowl and other birds. Schleswig-Holstein is particularly at risk because the state is an important bird migration area. According to the ministry, the avian influenza event in 2020/2021 is "the biggest, most serious and longest-running event to date".

Since the first outbreaks at the end of October 2020, the avian influenza virus has been confirmed in around 700 wild birds in Schleswig-Holstein until mid-June 2021. Nationwide, Schleswig-Holstein was hardest hit with more than half of all confirmed cases in Germany. There were also outbreaks in ten smaller and larger domestic poultry holdings. The bird flu virus with the subtype H5N8 was also found in three seals in the summer.

Avian influenza: compulsory housing lifted in some regions

The districts of Pinneberg, Nordfriesland, Ostholstein and Plön have restricted the stables to certain regions.

Avian influenza in the Plön district: 76,000 chickens killed

The culling in Kühren is supposed to prevent the virus disease - also known as bird flu - from spreading further.

  • Germany - Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 in wild birds

    Source: https://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/niede...grippe590.html

Avian flu: Hundreds of wild geese fall dead from the sky
    Status: 04/14/2021 8:33 a.m.

Around one million farm animals have been killed in Lower Saxony because of the H5N1 virus. Bird flu is also spreading among wild animals, as is evident in the East Frisian Rheiderland.

Farmers report to NDR Lower Saxony that they find dead birds in their fields every day. Since shortly before Easter, hundreds of wild birds have fallen from the sky or simply fell over. Even if an analysis by the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, which is responsible for animal diseases, is still pending, "it cannot be anything other than bird flu," says district spokesman Jens Gerdes.

Carcasses can contaminate forage for cows

"First they empty our fields, then we have to dispose of them," says farmer Rolf Dreesmann from Nendorp. The situation is an additional burden for farmers. If the carcasses stayed where they were and ended up in the green feed, the cows could die. The municipalities have therefore set up containers in which the animals can be disposed of.
Experts fear bird deaths like in Schleswig-Holstein

According to the Friedrich Loeffler Institute, the virus could spread further. Birds of prey, seagulls and curlews are particularly endangered. The threat of bird death is similar to that in the Wadden Sea of ??Schleswig-Holstein. There have been 16,000 dead wild birds there since November.
