  • Germany detects low pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 on poultry farm in Brandenburg - confirmed by OIE

BERLIN, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Germany reported a first case of
the contagious bird flu strain H5N1 on Friday on a small poultry
farm in the northeastern state of Brandenburg, the state's
    consumer protection ministry said.
The farm in the Oberhavel district was sealed off and some
500 chicks, ducks and geese were culled, a spokeswoman for the
consumer protection ministry of Brandenburg said.
"It's the first time in the current season that this type of
bird flu was detected on a poultry farm in Brandenburg," the
    spokeswoman said.

The H5N1 strain is regarded as highly pathogenic, but less
dangerous than the even more contagious H5N8 strain found in
several European countries in the past few weeks.

If it is true that the H5N1 strain is also in Germany - then all Europeans need to be sure to take precautions regarding handling and consumption of poultry. The H5N1 strain does have a history of infecting humans and the historical reported fatality rate is quite high at 52.8% link

H5N1 virus in poultry stock: 500 animals for culling

The bird flu has now also reached poultry farming in Brandenburg. However, it is not the high-infected H5N8 virus but a less contagious form. Ducks, chickens and geese must nevertheless be killed.

Oberkr?mer / Potsdam (dpa / bb) - The mild form of avian flu H5N1 has been discovered in the poultry population of a farm in Oberkr?mer (Oberhavel). 500 animals have to be killed within 48 hours after the positive laboratory result of the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute, in order to prevent the pathogen from jumping over to other stocks, as reported by the Ministry of Consumer Protection and the county on Friday. In addition, Stephan Nickisch, a veterinarian, has activated the crisis center to coordinate the disease control at the country level, they said.

The present finding in Oberkr?mer is however not related to the outbreak of current avian influenza in wild birds, according to a ministry spokesman. This involves the high-level H5N8 exciter.

It was not until Friday morning that it became known that a second dead gull in the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark H5N8 was detected. The first wild bird, who died from the effects of avian influenza, was discovered a week ago at Werder / Havel. Consumer Protection Minister Stefan Ludwig (left) then issued a country-wide stabling obligation for poultry.

The H5N1 infection in Oberkr?mer was discovered by chance. The breeder wanted to have his ducks released from the stables by the veterinarians. The authorization was preceded by a virological examination. Lastly, the mild form of avian influenza in Brandenburg in 2013 was demonstrated in a duckling farm. There is no danger to humans.

In an agricultural enterprise in Oberkr?mer in the district of Oberhavel, all 500 chickens, geese and ducks have been culled since Freitagnachagag. Previously, the district of Oberhavel had confirmed the suspicion of an avian flu virus. According to the Office, this is a comparatively mild form of the H5N1 virus and not the subtype H5N8, which was previously detected in Brandenburg.
