A case of avian flu detected in Vendée on a vaccinated duck farm

    Published on01/04/2024 at 12:40 p.m.

The Vendée prefecture confirms the discovery of an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza on January 2, in a duck farm in the commune of Notre Dame de Riez in Vendée.

Following the detection of a case of avian flu at Notre Dame de Riez and to avoid any risk of spreading the virus to other farms, regulated protection and surveillance zones are respectively set up within a radius of 3 and 10 km around the contaminated establishment.

Within the 3 km radius, the municipalities (or parts of municipalities) concerned are: Notre Dame de Riez, Saint Hilaire de Riez (east of the D38 and D69), Soullans (east of the D69, south from the D82 and west of the D32), Commequiers (south of the D82).

In the 10 km zone, the municipalities concerned (or parts of municipalities) are: Saint Hilaire de Riez (west of the D38 and D69), Soullans (west of the D69, north of the D82 and east of the D32), Commequiers (north of the D82), Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, Le Fenouiller, Givrand, Saint Révérend, Coëx (north of the D6 and west of the D21 ), Apremont (west of the D21), Saint Maixent sur Vie, Challans (south of the D948), Le Perrier, Saint-Jean-de-Monts (east of the D51, north of the D38B and south of avenue Valentin).

“In these areas, all places where poultry and captive birds are kept are subject to specific requirements. In particular, the movements of poultry and other captive birds are prohibited, except for exemptions granted by the Departmental Directorate for Population Protection (DDPP). Surveillance is also reinforced by carrying out self-checks which are made obligatory by prefectural decree", specifies the Vendée prefecture.

Poultry farms in regulated areas will be subject to increased surveillance.

The ducks from this farm were vaccinated

To combat the spread of the virus, "an operation to depopulate the 8,700 ducks present on the farm affected by the outbreak of avian influenza was carried out" , underlines the prefecture. State services, and in particular the DDPP, are mobilized alongside the breeder, who will be compensated for the losses suffered by this operation.

All the ducks on this farm were vaccinated last November against highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). “It is recognized that vaccination does not completely eliminate the risk of infection of poultry in the event of introduction of the virus into the farm. On the other hand, vaccination reduces the excretion of the virus and viral circulation,” specifies the prefect of Vendée, which recalls that France has been at high risk with regard to HPAI since December 5, 2023.

“Stakeholders in the sector must ensure, throughout the territory, the strictest application of biosecurity measures to prevent the virus from entering farms via wildlife and human activities, and avoid its spread between farms" , adds the prefect.

These recommendations are also aimed at individuals who keep backyard and ornamental birds.

    PRESS RELEASE

    La Roche-sur-Yon, January 4, 2024

    AVIAN INFLUENZA

A first outbreak detected in Vendée in a duck farm

An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza was confirmed on January 2 on a farm
of ducks in the commune of Notre Dame de Riez in the Vendée department.

To avoid any risk of spreading the virus to other farms, the prefect of Vendée has taken
an order defining regulated protection zones (ZP) and surveillance zones (ZS) which
are respectively set up within a radius of 3 and 10 km around the establishment
    contaminated. (see map below).

Within the 3 km radius, the municipalities (or parts of municipalities) concerned are: Our
Dame de Riez, Saint Hilaire de Riez (east of the D38 and D69), Soullans (east of the D69, south
from the D82 and west of the D32), Commequiers (south of the D82).

In the 10 km zone, the municipalities concerned (or parts of municipalities) are: Saint
Hilaire de Riez (west of the D38 and D69), Soullans (west of the D69, north of the D82 and
east of the D32), Commequiers (north of the D82), Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, Le Fenouiller,
Givrand, Saint Révérend, Coëx (north of the D6 and west of the D21), Apremont (west
of the D21), Saint Maixent sur Vie, Challans (south of the D948), Le Perrier, Saint Jean de Monts
(east of the D51, north of the D38B and south of avenue Valentin).

In these areas, all places where poultry and captive birds are kept are subject to
to specific requirements. In particular, the movements of poultry and other birds
captives are prohibited, except for exemptions granted by the Departmental Directorate of
Protection of Populations (DDPP). Surveillance is also strengthened by carrying out
self-checks which are made compulsory by prefectural decree.

Poultry farms in regulated areas will be monitored
    reinforced.

In addition, as part of measures to combat the spread of the virus, an operation
depopulation of the 8,700 ducks present on the farm affected by the outbreak of influenza
avian research was carried out. State services, and in particular the DDPP, are mobilized alongside
of the breeder, who will be compensated for the losses suffered by this operation.

The ducks on this farm had all been vaccinated against highly avian influenza.
pathogen (HPAI) last November, in accordance with regulations. It is recognized
that vaccination does not completely eliminate the risk of infection of poultry in the event of
introduction of the virus into livestock farming. On the other hand, vaccination reduces the shedding of the virus
    and viral circulation.

France has been at high risk with regard to HPAI since December 5, 2023. The actors of
the sector must ensure, throughout the territory, the strictest application of measures
biosecurity to prevent the virus from entering farms via wildlife and
human activities, and avoid its spread between farms.

A second outbreak of avian flu detected on the same farm in Vendée

A second outbreak of avian flu was detected on Friday January 5 in Commequiers (Vendée), on the farm of Hervé Bessonnet, mayor of Notre-Dame-de-Riez and poultry breeder. Around 17,000 ducklings were euthanized on Saturday January 6.

It's a double punishment for Hervé Bessonnet, mayor of Notre-Dame-de-Riez and poultry breeder in the town, alongside his wife. Four days after the detection of an outbreak of avian flu in one of its warehouses leading to the euthanasia of 8,700 ducks in Notre-Dame-de-Riez , the Vendée elected official noted, Friday January 5, a new outbreak of the disease in its second building. The latter is much larger and is located in Commequiers. “We discovered dead animals there with symptoms of bird flu. We did laboratory tests and it came back positive. It’s a shock , ” the elected official despairs.

          Vaccinated ducks

A decision was therefore made, on Saturday January 6, to euthanize all the animals present on the site, around 17,000 Muscovy ducks, only 25 days old. At start of 2024, incomprehension reigns on the side from the Vendée breeder, especially since the ducklings in question were vaccinated eight days earlier . “The vaccines should have worked and that was not the case. Maybe the disease is spread through the air? There has been bad weather and a storm in recent days, is that related? We also know that there is strong pressure from avian flu in avifauna ,” believes Hervé Bessonnet.

          “We can’t stop like that”

The operator assures that he had nevertheless done what was necessary in terms of health protocol. Furthermore, the swabs taken on Tuesday January 2 were negative. This was no longer the case three days later. “That shows the speed at which all this can go ,” insists the mayor of Notre-Dame-de-Riez. This new blow plunges the couple even further into the unknown. “That's two disasters in quick succession and it doesn't make us want to continue, but we have equipment and investments. We can't stop like that ,” declares the mayor before concluding: “Our sector is under attack, my colleagues must look closely at what is happening. I hope this is an isolated case. »

A new outbreak of avian flu detected in Vendée, this time in a turkey farm in the town of Beaurepaire, near Les Herbiers.

This is the third outbreak of avian influenza detected this winter in Vendée. A turkey farm in Beaurepaire near Les Herbiers was affected this week. At the start of the year, two outbreaks were confirmed on the same duck farm, this time in the west of the department, at Notre Dame de Riez. Turkeys are not vaccinated against avian influenza, unlike ducks. As usual, precautionary measures were taken all around. And the 21,650 turkeys from the farm euthanized. The breeder will be compensated.

A new outbreak of avian flu has been detected in Vendée, this is the fourth since the start of the year, the prefecture announced this Wednesday. More than 6,000 ducks were slaughtered on a farm in Beaurepaire where another outbreak was discovered a few days ago.

Since the beginning of January, four outbreaks of avian flu have been discovered in Vendée. The last, confirmed on January 16, is located in Beaurepaire according to a press release from the prefecture published this Wednesday. A duck and duck farm is affected, 6,400 animals had to be slaughtered as part of measures to combat the spread of the virus. In this case, these are breeding ducks, they were not vaccinated, but vaccination is not obligatory for them. In addition, regulated protection and surveillance zones have been set up within a radius of 3 and 10 kilometers around livestock buildings.

This is the second outbreak discovered in Beaurepaire in less than a week; on January 10, a turkey farm was affected in this town located near Les Herbiers. In the first days of January, the avian influenza virus was discovered twice in the same duck farm in the town of Notre-Dame-de-Riez.
