Avian flu: all the ducks of a farm in Morbihan slaughtered. The specter of contagion hovers more than ever

This Wednesday, March 16, the president of the chamber of agriculture reveals that a duck farm in Ambon in Morbihan, saw all its animals slaughtered for health reasons. No doubt about the presence of the Avian Influenza virus. The sector is worried and the authorities are once again calling for respect for the confinement of poultry.

"There is no doubt that the ducks on this farm have been infected with the Avian Influenza virus. We are just waiting to find out if it is the H5N1 virus or the H7N9" specifies Laurent Kerlir, the president of the chamber of agriculture from Morbihan.

According to him, all the ducks on this farm in Ambon were slaughtered on Tuesday, March 15, as provided for by the health measures in force, decreed by the government. This Wednesday, "all the disinfection operations are in progress".

    Drastic measures

A perimeter of 3 km has been established in which no confined poultry can be moved from its farm or even sold. National measures had already been taken since November 5, French breeders being required to "shelter" their outdoor poultry to avoid contact with migratory birds that can transmit the avian influenza virus. .

Containment measures to be absolutely respected according to Laurent Kerlir who fears a rapid spread of the virus and urges breeders and individuals to bring in all their poultry to avoid any transmission by birds.

A spread that could be "catastrophic"

The president of the chamber of agriculture does not dare to imagine the consequences that could have an increase in cases of avian flu in Morbihan, the first French department producing meat poultry.

Relatively spared until then, Brittany has only been affected in recent months by three recorded cases: two ornamental geese living in a pond in Languidic (Morbihan) and two migratory birds in the Côtes d'Armor. However, strict containment measures have so far prevented the disease from spreading in the region.

For Laurent Kerlir, the proximity of the Brière marshes with a large population of migratory birds could explain the contamination in the department. The entire sector in Loire-Atlantique and Vendée is in fact either in the surveillance zone or in the protection zone.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture , as of March 15, 2022, France has 792 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in livestock, 36 cases in wildlife and 17 cases in backyards.

    The poultry sector in turmoil

With all the measures in place for several months, the government hoped to avoid a repeat of last winter's episode (2020-2021). Avian flu had spread to farms in the South-West and had only been stopped at the cost of the slaughter of more than 3.5 million poultry , mainly ducks.

This Wednesday, the ANVOL meat poultry interprofession speaks of a crisis "as violent as it is unexpected" , facing "the most serious health crisis in its history" . The sector is indeed affected by the soaring prices of cereals supplied to animals, energy and fertilizers with the war in Ukraine.

This is the fourth time since 2015 that France has been affected by avian flu. But in recent weeks the epizootic is gaining ground. Until then confined to the South-West, it has recently spread to the west of the Pays de la Loire, the second poultry producing region behind Brittany. Millions of ducks and other poultry have been culled to stem the virus.

A second outbreak of avian flu was detected in Morbihan on March 28, 2022 in a duck farm in Peillac. The 27,000 poultry have been slaughtered and protection and surveillance perimeters have been set up.

This is the second duck farm affected in Morbihan in a few days. On March 16, a first case of avian influenza was diagnosed in Ambon . And two outbreaks have been detected in Ille et Vilaine where more than 80,000 poultry must be eliminated this week.

To avoid any spread of the virus in a region which is today the leading producer of poultry in France, the 27,000 animals on the farm were slaughtered yesterday.

The Prefecture of Morbihan indicates that protection and surveillance perimeters are being set up around the farm concerned.

Within a radius of 3 kilometers (: Les Fougerêts, Malansac, Peillac, Saint
-Congard, Saint-Gravé, Saint-Martin-sur-Oust) and within a radius of 10 kilometers (Bains-sur-Oust (Ille-et-Vilaine ), Allaire, Caden, Carentoir, Cournon, La Gacilly, Limerzel, Pleucadeuc, Pluherlin, Rochefort-en-Terre, Ruffiac, Saint-Jacut-Les-Pins, Saint-Laurent-sur-Oust, Saint-Nicolas-du- Tertre , Saint-Perreux, Saint-Vincent-sur-Oust, Tréal.) all movements of poultry and other captive birds are prohibited.

“In general , indicates the prefecture, and in order to limit the spread of the virus, which can have significant economic consequences, all professionals in the poultry sector and individuals are reminded to strictly respect the measures. biosecurity (in particular sheltering), throughout the department and to remain extremely vigilant."

Surveillance of wild bird mortality is also reinforced and the discovery of dead wild birds must be declared to the SAGIR surveillance network on 02 97 47 02 83.

Avian flu in Brittany: 100,000 ducks killed in Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan

Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at 10:41 PM - By Céline Guétaz , France Bleu Armorique , France Bleu Breizh Izel
        Brittany

After the four confirmed outbreaks of avian flu in Brittany, a slaughter plan was decided on Tuesday, March 29. It concerns at least 100,000 ducks located in farms in southern Ille-et-Vilaine and southern Morbihan. Only ducks, more susceptible to the virus, will be slaughtered.

"The objective is to protect the Breton poultry sector " explains Cédric Henry, the president of the FDSEA 35. This is the first time that Brittany has been affected by the bird flu virus. "_We must act quickly for all of our breeding_s". A vast slaughter plan was decided on Tuesday, March 29. Only ducks are concerned " because they are more susceptible to the virus than other poultry ". Some 100,000 ducks will be killed in an area located in a corridor between the south of Ille-et-Vilaine and the south of Morbihan.

We have never experienced such a situation

Farmers affected by these slaughter plans will be compensated. As for those who are affected in their operations " we have to make them feel guilty, it can happen anywhere, it's not their fault " explains the union representative. All breeders must also continue to put in place what are called "biosecurity measures". This involves disinfecting all clothing, the surroundings of buildings, food delivery trucks in particular.

        Backyard poultry must be confined

Backyard poultry owners must also confine their animals and report any suspicious deaths. It is a measure that can also prevent a rapid spread of this highly pathogenic virus.

        A bird flu vaccine?

There is no vaccine or treatment for bird flu " but we would like a vaccine to be developed because it is the only solution today, " believes Cédric Henry. The breeders are worried "wheat will run out because of the war in Ukraine, and we may not have any more poultry because of the bird flu" adds the trade unionist.

An outbreak of avian influenza was confirmed in a turkey farm, Wednesday August 17, 2022, in a turkey farm in the town of Ploërmel ( Morbihan ). In order to fight against the spread of the virus, an operation to depopulate the 3,500 turkeys present in the farm was carried out , specifies the prefecture of Morbihan.

State services, and in particular the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations (DDPP), are mobilized alongside the breeder, who will be compensated for the losses suffered.

            Increased surveillance in seventeen municipalities

Regulated protection and surveillance zones are set up within a radius of 3 to 10 km around the farm to avoid any risk of spreading the virus. The seventeen municipalities concerned are Augan, Campénéac, Caro, Gourhel, Loyat, Missiriac, Monteneuf, Monterrein, Montertelot, Ploërmel, Porcaro, Réminiac, Ruffiac, Saint-Abraham, Taupont, Tréal and Val-d'Oust.

Within these perimeters, all places where poultry and captive birds are kept are subject to specific requirements. In particular, the movement of poultry and other captive birds is prohibited , unless waived.

Currently, this avian influenza virus is circulating among wild birds , and its spread to domestic poultry can have significant economic and health consequences for the poultry industry , continues the prefecture.

On Tuesday September 13, 2022, a case of avian influenza was confirmed in a barnyard at the home of an individual in the town of Néant-sur-Yvel ( Morbihan ) , the Morbihan prefecture announced in a press release.

In order to avoid any spread of the virus, an operation to depopulate the geese and hens present in the barnyard was carried out this Wednesday, September 14, 2022 by the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations (DDPP) mobilized alongside the owner . , continues the Prefecture.

It is also recalled that the avian influenza virus circulates actively among wild birds, and its spread to domestic poultry can have significant economic and health consequences for the poultry industry.

This is why the temporary control zone set up by the prefect on August 12 throughout the department requires individuals and professionals in the poultry sector to strictly comply with biosecurity measures.

In particular, poultry owners are reminded of their obligation to declare themselves to their town hall, to cloister their poultry or to cover the route with a net and to report to their veterinarian any mortality or abnormal health event , underlines the press release.
