Saône-et-Loire: two cases of avian influenza discovered
    Published on 01/07/2022 at 6:27 p.m.
    Written by France 3 Burgundy
Two corpses of wild geese were confirmed positive for wild influenza this Friday, January 7, in Vitry-en-Charollais (Saône-et-Loire). To stop the spread of the virus, the prefecture has in particular prohibited the exit of poultry from henhouses.

After the Covid, it is the turn of avian influenza to be talked about. This Friday, January 7, 2022, two corpses of wild geese tested positive for the highly pathogenic H5N1 virus, in the territory of Vitry-en-Charollais.

The prefecture has issued a decree to put in place restrictive measures to prevent the spread of the virus and detect its circulation. Among these measures, we find:

the census of private farmyards. Non-professional poultry keepers must make themselves known to their town hall
prohibition of entry or exit of poultry in henhouses
    ban on game bird hunting
authorization (conditionally) to hunt furry game

    These measures apply at least until January 15, 2022, in the municipalities of Vitry-en-Charollais , Paray-le-Monial , Saint-Yan and Varenne-Saint-Germain .

Other measures were already implemented before the prefectural decree, such as the obligation of confinement or netting of private poultry yards, as well as the daily monitoring of the health of poultry. In the event of abnormal animal mortality, a report to the Departmental Directorate of Population Protection is required.

As a reminder, avian influenza is not transmissible to humans through the consumption of poultry meat, eggs, fatty liver and more generally any food product.

Two twisted penguins carrying avian flu found dead in Côtes-d'Armor

After Saint-Alban and Pléneuf-Val-André, it is in the town of Erquy (Côtes-d'Armor) that two corpses of torda penguins have been found. According to analyzes dated Tuesday, February 1, 2022, they were carriers of the Avian Influenza virus.

Cases of bird flu continue to multiply on the coast of Penthièvre. After the discoveries of the corpses of a cul-blanc knight in Saint-Alban (Côtes-d'Armor) on Tuesday January 11, 2022 , then of a buzzard in Pléneuf-Val-André, Monday January 17 , it is two twisted penguins who were found dead in Erquy.

      More and more municipalities controlled

An analysis of the Labocea laboratory, carried out on Tuesday February 1 , revealed that they were both carriers of the Avian Influenza virus, without specifying whether that is what killed them.

The prefect of Côtes-d'Armor issued a new decree on Wednesday February 2, again determining a temporary zone of temporary control. It concerns the communes of Erquy, La Bouillie, Pléneuf-Val-André, and Planguenoual (a delegated commune of Lamballe-Armor).

Holders of poultry and other captive birds in these municipalities must confine them. The census of all places of detention of poultry, commercial or non-commercial holdings, and other captive birds continues to be carried out.

The restrictive measures will be lifted at least 21 days after the discovery of these contaminated birds.

Loire: new cases of avian flu after the discovery of five dead swans in Montverdun

Thursday, February 3, 2022 at 6:58 PM - By Tommy Cattaneo , France Bleu Saint-Étienne Loire
          Montverdun
          ...
New cases of highly pathogenic avian influenza type H5N1 have been confirmed in the Loire, after the discovery of five dead swans on the King's ponds in Montverdun. The prefecture has therefore decided to modify the perimeter of its "temporary control zone", a radius of five kilometers around the places of the discoveries which already concerned 12 municipalities in the Loire after the discovery of a dead swan in Mornand-en-Forez .

Confined poultry and suspended game bird hunting

From now on, two new Loire towns are concerned, namely Pralong and Sainte-Agathe-la-Bouteresse , in addition to Chalain-d'Uzore, Chalain-le-Comtal, Chambéon, Champdieu, Magneux-Haute-Rive, Montverdun, Mornand- en-Forez, Poncins, Saint-Paul-d'Uzore, Marcilly-le-Chatel, Saint-Étienne-le-Molard and Savigneux.

In concrete terms, the establishment of the temporary control zone provides that all backyard poultry or captive birds found in these municipalities must remain confined, either inside buildings or under a net. The hunting of waterfowl and game birds is also suspended, as is fishing; the direct sale of poultry slaughtered on the farm is prohibited.

Avian flu is not transmissible to humans

If, following the checks, no new case of avian flu is detected within 21 days, the Loire prefecture may decide to lift these measures. In their press release , the state services in the department also specify that poultry owners must also isolate their animals to avoid contact with potentially contaminated wild birds.

Still according to the prefecture, France currently has 339 outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in livestock, 28 cases in wildlife and 11 cases in backyards. It also recalls that this virus is not transmissible to humans through the consumption of meat, eggs or even foie gras.

              ...
The Loire-Atlantique prefecture reports that the avian influenza virus has been identified on a great egret found dead at a place called Massereau, in Frossay.

Highly pathogenic and contagious, the virus circulates through migratory birds. "It persists and remains active mainly in droppings and stagnant water containing contaminated droppings" , underlines the prefecture.

A control zone has been established in the surrounding municipalities of Frossay, Vue, Rouans, Saint-Etienne de Montluc, Cordemais, Le Pellerin and Bouée to avoid spreading the virus and contaminating neighboring poultry farms.

              Prohibited movements of poultry
Throughout this area, "places of detention of poultry and captive birds are identified and visited and enhanced surveillance of wild birds is put in place", specifies the prefecture.

"The movement of poultry and other captive birds is prohibited, unless it is verified by the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations that the risk of dissemination of the virus is under control" .

"If no other bird tests positive for this virus, all restrictions will be lifted within 21 days" , specifies the press release from the prefecture which also calls on poultry owners to respect the sheltering of birds and to alert the authorities in the event of a suspicious death.

A sick wild bird was spotted on February 1 on the beach of Saint-Jean-le-Thomas, in the English Channel. Tests revealed contagion to bird flu. The prefect has set up a temporary control zone.

After a whole battery of tests, a case of bird flu in the Channel is indeed confirmed. On February 1, a sick bird was spotted on the beach of Saint-Jean-le Thomas. The animal, a Belon Shelduck (from the Anatidae family: duck, goose, swan), had been recovered by the French Office for Biodiversity. The first analyzes carried out by the LABEO laboratory had revealed the presence of the avian influenza virus. These results have just been confirmed by the national laboratory of ANSES (National Food Safety Agency). “ The analyzes (…) confirmed that it was a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus of the H5 subtype ”, indicates the prefecture of Manche.

Since last November, France has been hit by an epidemic of avian flu, the fourth since 2015. The south-west of the country is the most affected. last week, the Ministry of Agriculture identified 328 outbreaks in farms, including 218 in the Landes. Nearly three million poultry, including 1.9 million waterfowl, have been slaughtered since the first cases appeared last fall.

Avian flu: 24 municipalities under surveillance after the death of a goose in Valenciennes

Monday in Valenciennes, a goose from the Etang du Vignoble died of the bird flu virus. The prefecture has set up a temporary control perimeter taking up a whole series of measures to limit the spread of the virus. The Etang du Vignoble site is concerned, as well as twenty-four surrounding municipalities.

At the town hall of Beuvrages, the decree of the Departmental Directorate for the Protection of Populations fell on Wednesday morning. Mayor Ali Ben Yahia quickly echoed this on the city's Facebook page. To put it simply, " any holder of henhouses, aviaries and dovecotes must make themselves known to the town hall ", explains the mayor. At the end of the afternoon, its municipal services and its municipal police chief were already registering a few calls from residents, decided to play the game.

                      Daily monitoring
The city of Beuvrages is one of the 24 municipalities (1) targeted by the prefecture, after the bird flu virus was identified on the corpse of a goose in the vineyard. A perimeter which therefore implies compliance with specific measures, to be observed for 21 days (or even longer if other cases are revealed).

The declaration in the town hall, as explained by Ali Ben Yahia, but also the daily monitoring allowing to report to a veterinarian any abnormal behavior or sign of disease. This is for everyone. In Beuvrages, for example, " we will watch over the colony of ducks in our pond ", explains the mayor.

More broadly, poultry and captive birds must be kept inside buildings or under nets. None must leave commercial exploitations (or not), except exemptions of course.

                      Distance yourself from the birds
The Vineyard site is of course also concerned by the decree. If it remains accessible to walkers, it is now forbidden to approach or feed wild birds. Signs will be put up this Thursday morning. It is also strongly recommended to avoid frequenting all areas where wild birds are stationed.

*The municipalities concerned by the scope: Anzin, Artres, Aubry-du-Hainaut, Aulnoy-lez-Valenciennes, Bellaing, Beuvrages, Bruay-sur-l'Escaut, Famars, Hérin, La Sentinelle, Maing, Marly, Oisy, Petite -Forest, PRéseau, Prouvy, Raismes, Rouvignies, Saint-Saulve, Saultain, Thiant, Trith-Saint-Léger, Valenciennes, Wavrechain-sous-Denain.

The bird flu virus detected on a vulture in South Aveyron, Lozère on alert
                            ...
                            Published on05/19/2022 at 17:34 , update at 5:53 p.m.

The animal was found dead in a nest, in the town of Veyreau, on May 17. A temporary control zone is set up as far as Lozère.

The highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI), subtype H5N1, was confirmed by the ANSES laboratory on May 17 in a vulture found dead in a nest in the town of Veyreau, in Aveyron.
                            ...
To prevent the spread of the virus, the prefect of Lozère and the prefect of Aveyron have set up a temporary control zone (ZCT) with a radius of 5 km around the place of discovery of the infected vulture. The purpose of this ZCT is to protect the birds of professional farms and individuals. It is not intended to regulate the living conditions of vultures.

                            21 days minimum

Sanitary measures and restrictions on the movement of poultry and other kept birds and their products have thus been defined by prefectural decree for a minimum period of 21 days. The objective is to avoid the transmission of the disease from wildlife to kept birds (poultry farms, backyards, ornamental birds) by the strict application of biosecurity measures in farms and by sheltered in a building or outside protected from captive birds.

                            Four Lozère municipalities

The municipalities of Lozère in ZCT are: Le Rozier, Saint-Pierre-des-Trpiers, Hures-la-Parade and, for part of its territory, Massegros-Causses-Gorges. The main health measures to be observed in this specific area are as follows: listing of all places where poultry and captive birds are kept, including ornamental ones; sheltering poultry and captive birds, including backyard poultry; visits to all commercial farms by a health veterinarian or the services of the Departmental Directorate for Employment, Labour, Solidarity and Population Protection (DDETSPP); the strengthening of biosecurity measures, in particular the disinfection of vehicles entering or leaving bird farms; prohibition of movement of poultry and other captive birds, unless waived; the ban on releasing game birds into the natural environment; strengthening the monitoring of wild birds.

                            ...

L’animal a été retrouvé mort dans un nid, sur la commune de Veyreau, le 17 mai. Une zone de contrôle temporaire est mise en place jusqu’en Lozère.
