    GIBRALTAR CONFIRMS FIRST CASE

Gibraltar has confirmed its first case of coronavirus.

Writing on twitter, Chief Minister Fabian Picardo said: “We have a confirmed case of coronavirus covid19 in Gibraltar.

“The patient had travelled to Northern Italy via Malaga airport.

“The patient is happily recovering well and their partner has no symptoms.

“We will make more information available as soon as we are able to.”

A government statement added that the person is now self-isolating and efforts are being made to contact medical staff with whom they have had contact.

The first confirmed case of coronavirus (COVID-19) in Gibraltar has already been discharged. The patient was negative in two separate tests that were carried out on two different days. The authorization has been given by the Gibraltar health authorities after going through the standard procedures. The patient discharged is now free to end the isolation and resume a normal life.

There are currently 63 people in isolation after passing through countries in the list of risk destinations issued by the Government. Of this group, 38 people have been tested, negative, and 13 are waiting for the results. The others will be tested as soon as the protocols advise.

He said: "Do not travel to Spain unless it is absolutely necessary.

"I appreciate some of you have homes there, but avoid travel to Spain entirely unless it is absolutely necessary.

"If you do, your reasons for travelling to Spain must in keeping with the rules governing the State of Emergency declared in that country."

In Gibraltar itself, Mr Picardo said there were currently two active cases, with one other person having recovered. In addition, the authorities have sent off 91 samples so, of which it was awaiting 39 results.

THERE ARE NOW EIGHT ACTIVE CASES OF CORONAVIRUS ON THE ROCK, WITH TWO OTHERS ALREADY RECOVERED.

All these active cases are in isolation in recovery, receiving the medical care they need.

A total of 124 people have been tested as of today with 24 results still to be confirmed.

In Gibraltar, five more cases of Covid-19 were confirmed overnight, bringing the total to 15, of whom five are already recovered and another five are soon to be recovered. Two of the cases have been admitted to St Bernard's Hospital.

"As we have seen, the number of persons diagnosed with this cruel disease in Gibraltar creep up, we have noted the sharp increase in persons diagnosed sadly, also in Spain," Mr Picardo said.

"The Director of Public Health has now advised that as the virus is in the population, the best way to achieve the social distancing required is to slow the disease to move to a total social lock down."

Speaking at the daily press conference in No.6 Convent Place, Mr Picardo said the measures would put Gibraltar's economy into "an induced coma".

And he stressed Gibraltar, where the total number of COVID-19 cases stands at 35, 22 of which remain active, was of particular concern due to its close proximity to Spain, the second-worst hit country in Europe. According to the latest figures from the Department of Health and Social Care, 11,658 people have tested positive with the virus in the UK - with 578 sadly dying. However, Andrew Rosindell, Tory MP for Romford and chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the British Overseas Territories, said the figures did not take into account the many small islands and other areas which are closely aligned with the UK

THE number of confirmed cases continue to rise in Gibraltar, with the number now at 95, 49 of which are currently active.

A total number of 1136 swab tests have been conducted, with 428 results remain pending.

March 4 was when the first COVID-19 patient was confirmed to have the virus in Gibraltar, nearly one month ago.

The Government revealed today that the random systematic tests have reached a number of 159 and one person has tested negative.

“The tests carried out so far is some 3.6% of the population,” said Deputy Chief Minister Joseph Garcia.

Early analysis of statistical data collected by the Gibraltar Health Authority suggests the rate of infection in the community may be slowing thanks to lockdown measures, the Gibraltar Government said on Sunday, even as it warned the worst was still to come and cautioned against complacency.

There were three new cases confirmed on Sunday, bringing the total up to 102 from 98 on Saturday and 95 on Friday. Of the positive cases, 50 are currently active and 52 have recovered.

The data was released as Dr John Cortes, the Minister for Public Health, also confirmed that 344 random tests had now been taken in the community in parallel to the targeted testing on people with symptoms.
