  • Slovakia reports outbreak of severe bird flu: OIE - Backyard poultry, wild birds

    Thu Dec 29, 2016 | 12:18pm EST

Slovakia has confirmed an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5 bird flu virus, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Thursday, citing a report from the country's agriculture ministry.

The disease was detected among laying hens in a backyard in the capital Bratislava. It killed 64 out of 65 birds exposed to the virus, with the remaining animal slaughtered, the report posted by the OIE said. The report did not indicate what strain of H5 bird flu was found.

      Ministry of Agriculture:

The first confirmed case of avian flu confirmed in Slovakia, comes from private breeding in Bratislava
      29-12-2016
In Bratislava district D?bravka was today confirmed the first outbreak of avian influenza in the Slovak Republic. It is a highly pathogenic aviary influenza (HPAI) subtype H5. Was detected in domestic backyard poultry. State Veterinary and Food Administration urges breeders to adhere to biological protecting the farms and in case of suspicion immediately contact the nearest Veterinary and Food Administration.
On 12/27 before midday was the Regional Veterinary and Food Administration (DVFA) of Bratislava mesto-reported mass mortalities in domestic backyard hens (for own consumption) in a family house in town district Bratislava-Dubravka. DVFA the inspector came to suspect holding and breeding to carry out surveys in which it was found that within 3 days during the Christmas holidays was the death of the entire breeding flock. Overall, it was the 65 pieces of domestic fowl pullets aged over 4 years of laying hens. Eggs and meat from the livestock breeders were based on information intended only for personal use and not commercially.
