  • Netherlands - Avian Flu HP H5N6 detected in wild duck - sept 3, 2018

On Wednesday, August 29, 2018, Wageningen Bioveterinary Research (WBVR) confirmed bird flu in a wild duck (mallard) that was found dead at the Eemmeer (lake between the provinces of Utrecht, Flevoland and North Holland). The virus is then typed as high pathogen H5N6.

This subtype was first confirmed in the Netherlands in December 2017 at a poultry farm, and shortly thereafter also in wild birds. The last dead wild bird infected with H5N6 was found in March 2018.

WBVR is currently carrying out further research to gain further insight into the origin and genetic composition of the virus.
