Re: Netherlands - Avian Influenza in Hekendorp, Utrecht province - 150,000 chickens culled - High Pathogenic H5N8 - Nationwide transport ban

I was wondering whether some wild birds are maybe attracted to the poultry farms
by their odeur. The wind direction was right from a lake to a poulty farm in
Heinrichswalde and Hekendorp. They found the Baikal teals in Dongjing
and a big role of migratory birds in the outbreak in Korea,2014

    can birds smell ?

For more than a century nearly everyone believed birds sense of smell was poorly developed or nonexistent. They were wrong.

Frightened chicks vomit a foul-smelling orange liquid, likely becoming a less attractive
    snack to a potential predator;

the smells in air currents near their lofts help pigeons navigate

A large body of evidence has shown that anosmic pigeons are impaired in their navigation. However, the role of odours in navigation is still subject to debate. While according to the olfactory navigation hypothesis homing pigeons possess a navigational map based on the distribution of environmental …

pigeons only navigate well when they perceive environmental odours.
Breeding Spheniscus penguins are central place foragers that feed primarily on schooling pelagic fish. They are visual hunters, but it is unclear how they locate prey patches on a coarse scale. Many petrels and storm petrels (Procellariiformes), the penguins' closest relatives, use olfactory cues to …

Penguins are attracted to dimethyl sulphide at sea.

Fouchier presumably knows the sequences and he thinks it were wild birds

        ------------------------------------------------------

Renowned virologist and bird flu expert Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Center in
Rotterdam explained it was a mystery how the virus had reached the Netherlands.
"We have no idea where it's coming from," he said, noting that the flu had "popped up,
out of nowhere, in farms without any poultry trade record with Asia".
Fouchier said that the infection likely came through wild waterbirds, such as ducks,
geese or swans, that had migrated from Asia and left droppings near the Dutch farm.
Fouchier said he did not expect other farms or humans to become infected as outdoor
poultry farms had been relocated indoors.

        ----------edit-----------------

Renowned virologist and bird flu expert Ron Fouchier said that British authorities had told European
authorities that their virus is the same H5N8 strain as found in Germany earlier this month and now
        in the Netherlands.
"The UK virus is also similar to the German one, that would mean that it's the H5N8 strain,?
        Fouchier told AFP.
An EU source told reporters that it is "most likely the same strain in all three places," the Netherlands,
        Britain and Germany.
The source said "more outbreaks would not be surprising" in countries such as France, Spain and Italy
as the "disease might have come from swans migrating from north to south."

WHO said the virus had most likely moved from Asia to Europe with migratory wild birds
So far, no cases of human infection have been detected, either in Asia or in Europe, Mumford said.
She acknowledged though that 'influenza viruses are very unpredictable, and it's very difficult
to tell what a new virus will do'.
she “absolutely” expected more bird flocks to fall sick.

GENEVA: A new kind of bird flu hitting European poultry farms will surely continue to spread among birds, the World Health Organization said Tuesday, urging countries to be “vigilant.”Whether the virus will spread to humans remains unclear, the UN health agency said.“We should all be quite vigilant,” Elizabeth Mumford, a scientist with the WHO’s Global Influenza Program, told reporters in Geneva.Responding to questions, she said she “absolutely” expected more bird flocks to fall sick. She stressed the importance of culling sick birds and monitoring fever in humans who have been in contact with

Netherlands: No new bird flu cases, transport ban lifted

            BY EUOBSERVER

The nationwide prohibition on transporting poultry, eggs, and poultry manure in the Netherlands has been lifted after tests showed no farms in a zone of 10 kilometres around the affected farm have been infected with bird flu. The restrictions on the 10-km zone remain in place for one month.
