Italy - New outbreak of avian influenza HP H5N8. 95.000 laying hens, Bergamo
On 5 March, the National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease confirmed as positive for Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A virus subtype H5N8 a laying hen farm in Bergamo province (Lombardy region). At the time of confirmation, the farm housed about 95,000 birds. On 2 March, a marked mortality increase and a drop in egg production were reported to the Veterinary Services. Further information will be provided as soon as available.
Outbreak of avian influenza in the Bassa, 135 thousand birds destroyed
The operations immediately put in place have led to the suppression of 135 thousand animals, chickens and turkey chicks.
An outbreak of bird flu has alarmed the Bergamo area. After a first outbreak in November, the attention of Ats Bergamo is back on the Martinengo breeding.
The technicians of the AST Bergamo Veterinary Prevention Department confirmed an outbreak of H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza in a herd of laying hens in Martinengo, but the alarm involves the whole of Lower Bergamo.
Immediate euthanasia abatement operations took place in the approximately 95 thousand laying hens involved and the destruction of carcasses in a specialized company in the province of Bergamo and cleaning and disinfection of the breeding center of an outbreak. At the same time, on request by the competent Offices of the Lombardy Region and authorization from the Ministry of Health, about 40 thousand turkey chicks were slaughtered in two farms in the immediate vicinity of the outbreak.

The positivity regards a layer hen farm. Culling of 94,645 layer hens has been completed on 7th March, 2018 and all 96,007 animals have been safely disposed of.
