    Italy reports outbreak of H5N8 bird flu in Venice region - OIE

    (Reuters) - Italy reported an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N8 bird flu virus on a turkey farm in the northeastern part of the country near Venice, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said on Tuesday.

    The strain is the same as in other cases found in Germany, the Netherlands and Britain since early November and which had devastated flocks in Asia earlier this year.

      Exterminated for precautionary 32,000 turkeys for breeding


      Porto Viro - identified an outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N8 from a sample of tracheal swabs of turkeys coming from the herd of Porto Viro agricultural society Delta energy via Gramignana. The immediate reaction of the city's mayor Thomas Giacon that issued an order of killing, destruction of the carcases, bedding, feed and manure of the over 32,000 animals present in company. The operations took place between monday night and tuesday after the official confirmation has been on the part of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie. The heads at Porto Viro were purchased from a company of the province of Cesena, the mixes srl of San Vittore and were reared in stable of track Gramignana in the area between Ca' Hat and Porto Levante.
      The Region has decided to prohibit the veneto territory trade fairs, exhibitions and markets with poultry. The news of the first outbreak of avian influenza in Italy has been reported tuesday also by the World Organization for Animal Health. The strain is the same as that detected in november in other cases in Germany, the Netherlands and Great Britain. In the epidemic were already killed 1,200 turkeys, but the danger for the human race for this type of virus, is very low.
