Affected population On 8 February 2017, a suspicion of avian influenza in poultry was reported to the Veterinary and Food Safety Directorate. Approximately 52 poultry were found dead. Some animals showed clinical signs of the disease. Samples were taken and sent to the Croatian Veterinary Institute - Poultry Centre (Croatian Reference Laboratory) in Zagreb. Avian influenza subtype H5N8 was detected in the pooled samples on 10 February 2017. According to the preliminary laboratory results, on 10 February 2017 susceptible species from the affected holding were killed. Also the animals from the holdings that were in contact with the affected holding were killed and sampled. On 14 February 2017, highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N8 was confirmed. Implementation of the disease control measures according to the Directive 2005/94/EC is still ongoing. Laboratory tests on samples from animals originating from contact neighbouring holdings are still ongoing. The numbers of animals (susceptible, killed and destroyed) are preliminary and final results will be presented in a next follow-up report.
