    Second H5N8 suspicion confirmed

    11/11/2016

The dangerous H5N8 virus strain has been found in a second Vorarlberger poultry farm. In this farm, where the first case was dived, all 1,100 turkeys had to be culled.

The second suspicion of bird flu in domestic poultry was announced on Friday. The samples were sent to the Agency for Health and Nutritional Safety (AGES). On Friday evening the suspicion became clear: "A clear virus detection still exists, however, the samples sent indicate the contagious animal infections," says Norbert Greber, the country's veterinarian, in a country report.

A further investigation should bring clarity, the result is expected for Saturday. The company concerned was a company on the border with Bavaria. The first confirmed H5N8 case in domestic poultry was dived in a bio-certified free-range turkey farm in Hard. Previously, the highly pathogenic virus had only been detected in wild birds.
