The H5N8 virus in Poland continues to spread to large poultry farms, most recently to a stall with 36,000 hens. Experts expect the poultry fatteners to have significant economic consequences
02/04/2020
Avian influenza type H5N8 continues to spread in Poland. The responsible veterinary authority confirmed the eighth outbreak in the Greater Poland Voivodeship last week. This is a farm with a total of 36,000 chickens.
As part of the prescribed epidemic protection measures, the usual danger zones in 3 km and 7 km around the company were identified. In addition, the stock was culled immediately, the authority said.
At the beginning of the week, an epidemic in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship caused a sensation. Almost 23,500 turkeys were affected by the first case in the region in three years. Although the avian influenza has occurred in very different parts of the country in recent weeks, the epidemic was concentrated in Greater Poland. On December 31 of last year, the first current case in a chicken business with 65,000 animals was confirmed almost simultaneously with an outbreak in Lublin.
The epidemic is likely to have significant economic consequences for Polish poultry fatteners, especially since around half of the annual poultry meat production is destined for export. In the past few years, the export business had grown strongly, placing Poland as the first poultry producer in the European Union. The business was driven in particular by high demand from China and South Africa, so that any further restrictions on imports from these countries would leave correspondingly strong marks on the balance sheet.
In recent weeks, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, Hong Kong, South Africa, Japan, China, South Korea, Ukraine and Belarus have restricted the import of poultry from Poland.

Avian flu near Legionowo. Confirmed case on Lake Wieliszewskie
The veterinary inspectorate urges walking residents to report cases of dead water birds and birds of prey.
February 19, 2021
The district veterinarian informed about the case of avian flu in the Legionowo district. The H5N8 virus was detected in the body of a dead swan found on Lake Wieliszewskie. H5N8 is harmless to humans but dangerous to birds. The only known way to fight the virus is to kill infected animals and dispose of their remains. - It is recommended to limit the movement of people in the vicinity of the Wieliszewskie Lake (especially with dogs) in order to limit scaring birds - we read in the release. - It is probable that further falls of birds will occur in and around the lake. Fallen birds should be collected by municipal services and disposed of.

Krasne Potockie. Another outbreak of bird flu. The poultry was disposed of since dawn
Another outbreak of avian flu was found in our region. This time in Krasne Potock in the Che?miec commune. Today, the gassing of sick animals continued from dawn. - Please be especially careful and follow all the guidelines of the District Veterinary Doctor in Nowy S?cz - are appealing the representatives of the local government of Che?mno.
The first two outbreaks of pathogenic bird disease were detected on March 20 in Bielanka (Gorlice commune). Six thousand laying hens and over ten thousand turkeys for slaughter were finally gassed there. It was the first recorded case of avian influenza in Ma?opolska, which we wrote about -> here. Yesterday, the head of the Che?miec commune informed that the plague had also reached the town of Krasne Potockie. Some of the poultry in the poultry houses died. It turned out that the culprit is precisely the HPAI virus of the H5N8 subtype.
The utilization of sick animals continued from dawn. Just after 6.00 a.m., firefighters from the Volunteer Fire Department Krasne Potockie and RGN No. in Nowy S?cz were ordered to operate in the henhouses. There were also present: representatives of the County Veterinary Inspector in Nowy S?cz, the Grupa Azoty Chemical Rescue Unit from the Tarn?w branch, a company from Krynica Zdr?j dealing with disinfection of vehicles entering and leaving the infected zone and decontamination of clothes and equipment used on site, as well as a company dealing with the carriage of carcasses.
,, The area of ??the outbreak was marked out by a fence around the henhouses. The activities carried out by the Krasne Potockie TSO team before the arrival of the PSP team consisted in placing disinfection mats in three places. The first one at the exit from the outbreak area, the second one located approximately 20 meters away, and the third one at the exit to the municipal road. Further actions of the TSO team consisted in dismantling part of the wall in order to gain access for the wheel loader. The activities of the Grupa Azoty Chemical Rescue Unit, Tarn?w branch, consisted of gassing the remaining birds and loading them onto a vehicle for transporting dead animals. At the same time, during the activities, the employees of the disinfection company disinfected vehicles entering and leaving the zone, "the firefighters of the State Fire Service in Nowy S?cz report.
In addition, a police patrol arrived to pilot a vehicle carrying fallen birds. The activities lasted four hours.
An appeal to poultry farmers, the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Chief Veterinary Officer
,, Highly pathogenic avian influenza virus (HPAI), subtype H5N8 - is not dangerous to humans, but is very harmful to the economy and dangerous to your farms.
Infected wild birds are the main cause of the spread of the H5N8 avian influenza virus. Unfortunately, it is also a human being, which is why we remind you of the basic rules of conduct.
Please strictly follow the principles of biosecurity:
protect the feed against the access of wild animals;
do not feed poultry outside of buildings where poultry are kept;
use protective clothing and footwear on the farm and wash hands with soap and water after each contact with poultry or wild birds;
use disinfecting mats at the entrances and exits of buildings where poultry is kept;
it is advisable to keep poultry in designated rooms without the possibility of free movement in an open range.
It is also reminded that administrative penalties will be imposed for non-compliance with biosecurity principles ?.
