    3 weeks now that 5 segments were found that are in America for the first time
    since >50 years, some probably since >100.
    And it had already reassorted with American influenza.
    Enhancing the American and thus worldwide influenza genetical reservoir.
    That's the way how pandemics are created.

    Still no sequences at genbank.

    7 weeks now since H5N8 appeared in Europe mysteriously with no trace
    between Europe and SE-Asia.With great impact for the European poultry
    industry and private fowl keepers, as well as pandemic potential according
    to the latest paper by Li,Wang(2),Gu,Zhu,Hao,Gao,Sun,Hu(2),Liu(2).

    Still no sequences at genbank.

    The first known case of human infection with influenza A(H5N1) occurred in a 3-year-old boy
    who died from respiratory failure in May 1997 (1).
    Of the 15 remaining confirmed cases, five persons had onset of illness in November
    and 10 in December;


    In Hong Kong, the virus initially was identified as influenza type A, but the subtype could not be
    determined using standard reagents. By August, CDC; the National Influenza Center, Rotterdam,
    the Netherlands; and the National Institute for Medical Research, London, United Kingdom,
    had independently identified the virus as influenza A(H5N1)

    METHODS:
    We carried out an antigenic and molecular comparison of the influenza A H5N1 virus isolated
    from the boy with one of the viruses isolated from outbreaks of avian influenza by
    haemagglutination-inhibition and neuraminidase-inhibition assays and nucleotide sequence analysis.
    FINDINGS:
    Differences were observed in the antigenic reactivities of the viruses by the haemagglutination-
    inhibition assay. However, nucleotide sequence analysis of all gene segments revealed that
    the human virus A/Hong Kong/156/97 was genetically closely related to the avian
    A/chicken/Hong Kong/258/97.

    of this report, there have been 12 additional
    confirmed human cases of influenza A
    (H5N1) infections in Hong Kong, include-
    ing three fatalities. Sequence analysis of the
    genes of six of the isolates revealed that all
    of the genes are of avian origin and are
    closely related to each other. The HA gene
    codes for a multiple basic amino acid inser-
    tion upstream of the cleavage site, associat-
    ed with highly pathogenic avian influenza
    viruses and identical to that seen in the
    A/Hong Kong/156/97 virus.

        it's grotesk.
        The most discussed question about H5N8 in Europe is, how it spreads - wild birds or cars.
        How it may enter the poultry farms despite all the security measures.

        What measures should be taken, culling, trade restrictions, onstalling ?
        The sequences would help to decide that.

        We have these groups (DE,NL) who think it's not the wild birds, they ignore the sequences.
        The official institutes say it's the wild birds but can't argue in the press with sequences
        because those mustn't be published because of the GISAID conditions.
        I think FLI(DE),CXXX(NL),DEFRA(UK) are afraid to mention the sequences to the press
        because they are afraid that reporters may ask then how to verify it, why they are not
        published.
