Zika cases diagnosed in the UK

ZIKV does not occur naturally in the UK. However, as of 14 September 2016, 189* travel-associated cases have been diagnosed since 2015. Of these, 126 are confirmed cases including:
    • 102 cases with virus detected [PCR positive]
    • 24 cases with antibody evidence indicating recent infection [seroconversion]
and 63 cases that have antibody evidence highly indicative of recent infection (Zika-specific IgM) [probable cases].
*Until 24 August 2016, PHE only reported the number of Zika cases confirmed by a test that detects the virus in the bloodstream or urine (PCR tests). However, as the virus is often only present within the bloodstream and urine for a short period of time, we have now included results from recently evaluated tests involving antibodies (serology tests), which detect whether an individual has had Zika infection in the past. We now include these test results in our total number of confirmed cases, in line with international guidance.

The majority of Zika cases in the UK have travelled to the Caribbean and South America. More than two-thirds of cases have travelled to the Caribbean.
The largest number reported travel to Jamaica (33), followed by Barbados, St Lucia, Grenada, and Trinidad and Tobago – all countries popular with UK travellers including those visiting friends and relatives.
Of those that travelled to South and Central America, most have reported travel to Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico and Nicaragua.
