This is a 29-year-old British tourist who had traveled to Kefalonia with his partner - The young man has skin rashes and other symptoms reminiscent of those of monkey pox - He will be hospitalized in a negative pressure room in "Attikon" - The results will be available on Monday

The first suspicious case of smallpox in monkeys is being evaluated by the Greek health authorities. This is a British tourist, 29 years old, who had traveled to Kefalonia with his partner for a vacation.

The young man has skin rashes and other symptoms reminiscent of those of monkey pox.

The health authorities of Kefalonia, which evaluated the incident, characterize it as a suspect for smallpox of monkeys. The transport of the man was organized by EKAB with all the relevant security measures. Transferred to a special capsule (such as Covid19 cases) for the protection of public health.

The 29-year-old is being evaluated in detail by the scientific staff of the "Attikon" Hospital, where he was transported, in order to determine if he has indeed been infected with the virus that causes the monkey pox.

The British tourist together with his companion, who is asymptomatic , were admitted to "Attiko" to be treated in negative pressure rooms.

EODY received samples for confirmatory examination which were sent to the reference laboratory and the results will be available on Monday.

The 29-year-old's companion was also transported in a special capsule with the same C-130 aircraft, as the health authorities and the staff of EKAB decided that the strict health protocol that applies to infectious diseases should be applied.

    The announcement of EODY

"A suspected case of possible smallpox infection of monkeys is being investigated. This is an English tourist who, together with his companion, asymptomatic, is treated at the Attica hospital in order to be treated in negative pressure rooms.

EODY received samples for confirmatory examination which were sent to the reference laboratory and the results will be available on Monday ".

British tourists struck down with monkeypox in Greece
The pair were airlifted to hospital in EipShuttle equipment
    By Tom Kershaw Content Editor
    13:48, 23 MAY 2022

Suspected monkeypox has struck down two tourists who have been airlifted to hospital while on holiday in Greece. A Hellenic Air Force C-130 Hercules picked up two British tourists from an airport in Kefalonia just after 11pm on Saturday.

The plane was carrying an isolation and transport system operated by EpiGuard, a Norwegian company, operating from one of 12 National Centers for Emergency Care in Greece. The system, known as EpiShuttle, is used to transport patients with suspected Covid, ebola, measles, tuberculosis, and now monkeypox.

The EpiShuttle can isolate any contagious patient, regardless of disease, and protect the staff and others. Ellen Cathrine Andersen, the CEO of EpiGuard, said her company steps in when patients need transport from outbreak hotspots to where ICU capacity is available, as well as offering intrahospital transfer for potentially contagious patients...

Laboratory test results for a suspected case of smallpox in monkeys

      Press Releases
      |22.05.2022

In a laboratory examination of a sample from the suspicious case of the man who is being treated at ATTIKON Hospital, no monkeypox virus was detected, while the sample was positive in two repeated tests for the chickenpox virus (varicella - chickenpox). The examinations were performed at the Reference Laboratory (Laboratory of Microbiology, AUTh Medical School) for Smallpox and at the Laboratory of Microbiology of ATTIKON Hospital.

Chickenpox virus, although it contains the synthetic -pox, is different from the viruses that cause smallpox or smallpox in monkeys. There is a relevance regarding the symptoms and the appearance of skin lesions caused by Chickenpox and Smallpox, Smallpox of monkeys.

Chickenpox has been eradicated from the human population since 1980 and Chickenpox is a common disease that causes about 4 million infections in children. There is a vaccine available for Chickenpox and it causes a milder illness than Smallpox.

About a case of smallpox in monkeys in our country

            Press Releases
            |08.06.2022

As of June 7, a total of 577 cases of smallpox have been reported in 18 European countries, as well as 437 cases in 10 countries outside Europe.

Today, 08/06/2022, a case with clinical symptoms compatible with the disease was reported to EODY by the "Andreas Syggros" Hospital. This is a man with a recent trip to Portugal.

The initial test carried out at the Agency's Central Public Health Laboratory for non-variola orthopox virus species, including the monkeypox virus, was positive.

The samples have been sent to the Laboratory of Microbiology of the Medical School of AUTh for the genomic confirmation of the monkey pox virus.

The patient is hospitalized in a stable condition.

According to the epidemiological data available so far, the risk to the general population is still low, as the disease is usually mild and self-limiting and the disease is characterized by relatively low transmissibility.

              June 12, 2022
              By The National Herald

ATHENS – A second person believed to have contracted monkeypox was identified in Greece, said the National Public Health Organization (EODY) which will make updates weekly on Thursdays.

The man, 47, wasn’t ientified but Kathimerini said he had recently traveled to Spain and was isolated in a hospital and in stable conditioin after initial tests said he was infected, including a range of “non-variola orthopox” viruses.

Further lab analyses of genetic material at Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University Medical School will be performed to determine whether the illness is, indeed, monkeypox, EODY said.

The report came three days after the first case was found in a patient who had traveled to Portugal and was hospitalized, and samples sent for further analysis to detect the gravity, said Reuters...
