    Overview of press releases

Communication from the Department of Health, Social Affairs and Integration:
Monkey pox: first case in the canton of Bern

A first suspected case of monkey pox was reported yesterday to the Cantonal Medical Service (SMC) of the Department of Health, Social Affairs and Integration of the Canton of Bern and to the Federal Office of Public Health ( FOPH). Laboratory analyzes carried out at the CRIVE of the Geneva University Hospitals confirmed the suspicion this afternoon.

SMC has undertaken contact tracing to identify possible chains of transmission. As far as we know, the person concerned was exposed to the virus abroad. She is followed on an outpatient basis and is in isolation at her home. All contact persons have been informed.

Monkeypox is a rare viral disease that is transmitted from animals (mainly rodents) to humans. Since the beginning of May, there has been a very unusual increase in cases of monkeypox in humans in several European countries and in the United States. Human-to-human transmission can occur through close contact with respiratory secretions, skin lesions of an infected person, or recently contaminated objects (eg, bed sheets). Droplet transmission usually requires prolonged personal contact.

The first symptoms of the disease are fever, headache, muscle and back pain and swollen glands. One to three days after the onset of fever, a rash develops, with smallpox-like blisters or pustules. The rash usually spreads from the head to the rest of the body. The palms of the hands and soles of the feet may also be affected. In the event of confirmed infection, that is to say after a laboratory analysis and a medical consultation, the cantonal doctor's service orders isolation until the last vesicles have turned into scabs.

Unlike human smallpox, which has been eradicated since 1980, monkeypox is generally much less severe. Most people recover within several weeks. On the whole, the prognosis can therefore be considered favorable, even if serious evolutions can occur in some affected people.

This is the first known case of monkeypox in Switzerland.

Today, a first case of monkey pox has been confirmed in the canton of Geneva. This is the second confirmed case in Switzerland, the first case having been confirmed on May 21, 2022 in the canton of Bern.

In accordance with the recommendations of the FOPH, the person concerned is in isolation until the complete resolution of the disease. His general condition is good and does not currently require hospitalization. The first elements collected indicate that she was contaminated during a trip abroad. An epidemiological investigation is underway to warn people who could be exposed.

Monkey pox (simian orthopox virus) is an infectious disease caused by viruses that is transmitted from animals to humans, but can also be transmitted from human to human. Since the beginning of May 2022, several dozen cases of monkeypox have been reported in several European countries, America and Australia.

This is the first time that chains of transmission with no known link to West or Central Africa have been reported. So far, the vast majority of reported cases have shown a favorable course with remission of symptoms.

Human-to-human transmission can occur through large respiratory droplets during close and prolonged contact. The virus can also be transmitted by contact. According to current information from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), people with multiple sexual partners, including men who have sex with men, appear to be at an additional risk of transmission. Further scientific analysis of modes of transmission is underway.

People with symptoms such as fever, body aches, weakness, and skin lesions should see a doctor, who will decide whether or not screening is necessary.

A third case in Switzerland, more than 330 worldwide

        Posted 27 May 2022, 11:36

A resident of the canton of Zurich tested positive after a trip abroad. In the world, the virus is spreading and only affects men.

A 42-year-old man has tested positive for the monkeypox virus in the canton of Zurich, the Zurich Directorate General of Health said on Friday. “He probably came into contact with the virus while traveling abroad. He is in isolation and his contacts have been informed,” said the Canton. In Switzerland, the first two cases had been recorded, the first in the canton of Bern , the second in the canton of Geneva .

The third case was probably infected abroad

Like the first two cases, the third person carrying the disease would be infected during a stay outside the country.

The third case of monkeypox in Switzerland, announced on Thursday, is a 42-year-old man from the canton of Zurich. He probably contracted the virus abroad.

The man is currently in solitary confinement, the Zurich public health department said on Twitter on Friday. His contacts have been informed. The other cases in Bern and Geneva are also men who were probably infected abroad.

We do not currently see a threat to the population. Presently the national and international epidemiological data suggest that outbreaks are limited. It has to be assumed that new cases will occur in Switzerland. For this reason we are calling on all healthcare actors for support in the early detection of cases and the isolation of infected people.

We are continuing to monitor the situation closely in coordination with the cantons, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and the WHO, and will provide information on further developments here.

Monkey pox: the virus identified in Switzerland has been dissected

The monkeypox virus detected in Switzerland reveals its secrets. Geneva researchers proceeded to sequencing his DNA. It matches that found in patients in other countries.

            30 May 2022, 08:41

The National Reference Center for Emerging Viral Infections (CRIVE), in Geneva, announced on Monday that it had carried out the complete DNA sequencing of the monkeypox virus which came from the first two cases identified in Switzerland on May 21 in the Bern region and on May 24 in Geneva. According to preliminary results, the virus genome is linked to cases of the disease reported in several other countries.

            PRESS RELEASE

FIRST GENOMIC SEQUENCING OF MONKEYPOX IN SWITZERLAND

            Monday 30 May 2022

The Geneva Centre for Emerging Viral Diseasesof the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) and the University of Geneva (UNIGE) has publicly made available the full monkeypox virus DNA sequence from the two first cases identified in Switzerland, on the 21st and 24th of May 2022.

The Geneva Centre for Emerging Viral Diseases shares the first sequencing results of the monkeypox genome from Switzerland.

This important step will enable further analysis and comparison with genome sequences from other countries. According to preliminary results, the virus sequence of the first two cases in Switzerland is genomically linked to cases reported in several other countries in the context of the current outbreak. The National Reference Laboratory for Emerging Viruses (CRIVE) team shares its genome with the scientific community, via the Platform Genbank.

Four cases of monkeypox have been confirmed by PCR test in Switzerland by the Virology Laboratory at HUG, part of the CRIVE, which is mandated by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) to monitor that type of event.

Those cases are part of a larger and unusual outbreak that is ongoing in multiple countries in Europe, South and North America and Australia with more than 400 confirmed cases, according to World Health Organization (WHO), since the reporting of the first case in the United Kingdom on the 7th of May 2022.

The virus can be identified with a PCR test, especially from affected lesions and other samples. Diagnosis is based to date on tests developed by specialized laboratories such as the one in Geneva. To enable other laboratories in Switzerland and around the world to integrate this test into their portfolio of Orthopoxvirus tests, CRIVE is sharing its protocol.

The CRIVE is closely monitoring the situation and is available for all diagnostic requests related to this outbreak.

Nine new cases of monkeypox confirmed in Switzerland

                          June 20, 2022 - 6:36 pm

                          (Keystone-ATS)
Nine new cases of monkey pox have been laboratory confirmed in Switzerland, the Federal Office of Public Health (OFSP) announced on Monday. This brings the total number of cases recorded in the country since May 21 to 40.

“Currently, we consider that there is no danger for the population”, writes the FOPH on its website. According to national and international epidemiological data, the outbreaks so far remain "limited". However, it is to be expected that new cases will appear in Switzerland.

Monkeypox is a less dangerous cousin of smallpox, eradicated about 40 years ago. The disease begins with a high fever and quickly progresses to a rash with crusting.

Monkeypox is a viral infectious disease caused by the simian orthopoxvirus. In humans, the clinical picture bears some similarity to smallpox, although monkeypox infections are generally less severe.

The infectious disease is transmitted to humans by other animal species, probably rodents (zoonosis). Human-to-human transmission is also possible.

(Updates take place on working days)We do not currently see a threat to the population.
