Swiss Amended yesterday at 9:18 p.m.

Alexandra Calmy: "Switzerland is very affected by monkeypox"

Unlike its neighbours, Switzerland still does not offer vaccination against monkeypox. A situation deplored by Alexandra Calmy, infectious disease specialist and head of the AIDS unit at HUG. Especially since "Switzerland is the 6th country most affected by monkeypox per million inhabitants", she underlines in the 7:30 p.m.

Invited on the television set, Alexandra Calmy, infectious disease specialist and head of the AIDS unit at the HUG, deplores the slowness of the Federal Council with regard to the authorization of the vaccine against monkeypox. For her, Switzerland must be able to quickly offer doses to people who want them. "We must not wait for the first death in Switzerland", she urges, directly asking the Minister of Health, Alain Berset, to act.

              Painful disease

Especially since, according to her, our country is very affected by this disease. "It's the sixth most affected country by monkeypox per million inhabitants. And on top of that, it's not a mild disease, we don't say that often enough. All this would therefore require a real political response,” she insists. "People are suffering a lot. There is no reason not to act."

She also deplores the fact that some people have to travel abroad to be vaccinated. And this, while they are often refused, as is the case in several vaccination centers in neighboring France. But she says she understands them.

"Some patients have told us that they have managed to get vaccinated elsewhere, some even go as far as Canada. People are very creative to obtain this vaccine and it is important that they have it. I find it a shame that resourcefulness is the only way to get what I believe we are entitled to in our society."

                    Current situation and assessment

The first reported case of monkeypox occurred in Switzerland on 19 May 2022. We started monitoring monkeypox cases on 21 May. Initially, cases were reported as exceptional findings. Monkeypox has been subject to mandatory reporting since 20 July.

Until now, we have published all monkeypox cases confirmed in Swiss laboratories. Since 17 August 2022, we only publish confirmed cases of people with a residential address in Switzerland or the Principality of Liechtenstein.

On 23 July 2022, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared the monkeypox outbreak a ‘public health emergency of international concern’. We continue to see a moderate threat to the population, although monkeypox infections are also increasing slightly in Switzerland. The population group currently most affected is men who have sex with men (MSM). The Swiss AIDS Federation (Aids-Hilfe Schweiz) regularly informs and raises awareness among this community on our behalf. An expansion of the outbreak to other population groups has not occurred to date, but cannot be ruled out.

For this reason, we continue to call on all healthcare actors as well as the people affected and their contacts for support to enable infected people to be identified early on so that the epidemic can be contained and controlled.

Short message from the Health, Social and Integration Directorate:

Monkeypox case among staff in a day care center in the canton of Bern

A person from the staff of a daycare center in the canton of Bern has tested positive for monkeypox. There were eight children and two adults in the daycare group affected. The parents of the eight children were informed by the daycare management and will be called again tomorrow, Wednesday, by the cantonal medical service of the canton of Bern (KAD) to clarify medical and other questions. The risk of transmission is estimated to be extremely low. The situation was discussed with the Federal Office of Public Health. KAD acts in accordance with international guidelines. The children can all continue to attend daycare.
