Weekly information on Human Infection by Monkeypox Virus – Nº 010

Information on the number of cases in Portugal until September 7, 2022

On May 3, the presence of the Monkeypox virus (VMPX) was detected in Portugal, with laboratory confirmation of five cases of human infection by VMPX. Since then, through September 7, 2022, 898 confirmed cases have been identified.

As of September 7, 2022, 831 cases were reported on SINAVEmed (Figure 1). Of the 831 cases, most belong to the age group between 30 and 39 years (367; 44%). Most cases are male (823; 99%), with 8 cases (1%) reported in females.

    Actions at national level

On July 16, vaccination of the first contacts close to cases began, according to the eligibility criteria of Norm 006/2022 of 07/12/2022. By September 4, 400 contacts had been vaccinated. Eligible contacts in the different regions continue to be identified and targeted for vaccination.

The DGS, in conjunction with INFARMED IP, the Technical Commission on Vaccination, the public health departments of the ARS and their respective regional vaccination teams, is analyzing and evaluating the conditions of operationalization/availability and equity in the management of the limited reserve of vaccines for the preventive vaccination approach. This analysis and evaluation covers technical and logistical aspects, in addition to the authorization of exceptional use and training of health professionals for the use of reduced doses of vaccination for adults.

49 cases of monkeypox detected since 1 June. Portugal exceeds the thousand cases
"Of the confirmed cases, 29 (74%) are men who had sex with men", says the health authority.
                  Lusa July 31, 2023 at 11:03 am

Forty-nine cases of Mpox were detected in Portugal, between June 1 and July 28, resulting from a new outbreak, according to data released by the Directorate-General for Health.

"This new outbreak is characterized by a different strain from the 2022 outbreak, reflecting the reintroduction of the virus in the highest risk group in Portugal and potentiated transmission chains in the context of events and summer festivals", adds the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) in a statement published on the website.

According to the DGS, all cases are men, mostly residents of the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region (38), aged between 22 and 55 years (median 34 years).

"Of the confirmed cases, 29 (74%) are men who had sex with men", says the health authority.

Considering the 21 days prior to the onset of symptoms, 17 (44%) cases refer to frequenting saunas, 33 (85%) had sexual contact with multiple partners and 18 (46%) participated in group and/or anonymous sex activities, some in the context of summer festivals; no case refers to trips abroad".

Since the beginning of the Mpox outbreak in May 2022 and until July 28, 2023, 1002 laboratory-confirmed cases have been reported in Portugal, including one death, and since March 27, no new cases have been reported in Portugal.

According to DGS data, between July 16, 2022 and July 28, 2023, 4,823 people were vaccinated, most of which in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region. Of the 8,009 inoculations, 7,054 occurred in a pre-exposure context.

In view of the resurgence of new cases in Portugal, the DGS reinforces the need to isolate cases and interrupt transmission chains between exposed individuals.

Mpox. Almost 100 cases detected in Portugal since June
According to the DGS, almost all cases are men (one female case), aged between 20 and 55 years, residing mainly in the regions of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (89%) and the North (11% ).
                    DN/Lusa
                    01 September 2023 — 13:25

Almost 100 cases of Mpox have been detected in Portugal since June, resulting from the second outbreak of this contagious disease that remains active, with an average of five new cases reported per week, according to the Directorate-General for Health (DGS).

"In June 2023, a new outbreak was identified, after about three months without reported cases", says the DGS, specifying that, between June 1 and August 30 of this year, 97 laboratory confirmed cases were identified, 94 of which notified in the National Epidemiological Surveillance System, with a clinical profile similar to the previous outbreak.

According to the DGS, almost all cases are men (one female case), aged between 20 and 55 years (median 33), residing mostly in the regions of Lisbon and Vale do Tejo (89%) and the North (11%),

Of the confirmed cases, 74 (80%) are men who had sex with men, says the health authority, noting that "in terms of the clinical picture, rash [skin rash] was observed in 78 (83%) of the cases with available information ".

Of the cases with available information, 36 (38%) have HIV infection.

"Considering the 21 days prior to the onset of symptoms, 32 (34%) cases refer to frequenting saunas, 68 (72%) had sexual contacts with multiple partners and 31 (33%) participated in group and/or anonymous sex activities ; 5 (5%) cases refer to trips abroad", indicates the health authority.

In total, between May 3, 2022 and August 30, 2023, 1,050 cases of Mpox were identified in Portugal, including one death.

On 22 August, the WHO continued to consider that "the global risk is moderate, which is also the case in the European Region", with Portugal leading in the European region as the most affected countries, followed by the United Kingdom (19), Spain (10), France (4), Germany (3), the Netherlands (3), and Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland (2).

From the beginning of the availability of vaccines (on July 16, 2022) until August 30, 2023, 5,763 people were vaccinated, most of them in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region. Of the 9,377 inoculations, 8,386 occurred in a pre-exposure context.

DGS reinforces the need for health professionals and civil society to move their efforts towards the early detection of new cases, the isolation of patients during the contagious period and vaccination with two doses within a 28-day interval of eligible groups, including by self-proposal.

The public health departments of the country's different health regions have "made efforts to expand the number of places available", with the list of vaccination sites available on the DGS website.

Worldwide, between January 1, 2022 and August 29, 2023, 89,596 confirmed cases and 663 probable cases of Mpox were reported to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 114 countries, including 157 deaths.

The number of new cases reported weekly worldwide increased by 40.8% in the week of 21 to 27 August compared to the previous week, with the majority of new cases in the last four weeks being reported in the Western Pacific Region (59.4 %) and in the Region of the Americas (23.5%).
