A woman from Equatorial Guinea had fever, vomiting and headaches, symptoms compatible with this disease, similar to Ebola

Nine days ago Equatorial Guinea ended an outbreak of the Marburg virus -similar to Ebola-. But the disease could have reached Spain since the Cantabrian Ministry of Health has activated the protocol for hemorrhagic fever in the face of a possible case in a patient admitted to the Santander hospital in Valdecilla and who had recently returned from the African country.

According to EFE sources of Health, this Wednesday a middle-aged woman was treated in the emergency room of the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital with fever, vomiting and headaches, symptoms compatible with this disease, for which the protocols were activated and the put her in isolation.

The samples have been sent to the laboratory of the National Center for Microbiology in Majadahonda (Madrid) , which must determine if it is the Marburg virus.

o The suspected case of hemorrhagic fever is negative in Marburg, Ebola and Lassa

    Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital

    MAY 25, 2023, 7:28 PM

The suspected case of hemorrhagic fever detected at the Marqués de Valdecilla University Hospital in Santander has tested negative for the Marburg virus, Ebola and Lassa fever, according to health sources to Europa Press. This Thursday, the Cantabrian center has activated the protocol for a suspected case of hemorrhagic fever of a middle-aged woman who went to the emergency department on Wednesday afternoon. The patient is in an isolation box "with the appropriate protection measures" and is "stable".

The samples have been sent for analysis to the National Center of Microbiology to determine the diagnosis and the results have concluded that you have neither Marburg virus, Ebola nor Lassa fever, according to the information provided by these health sources.

Before the results became known, the general director of Public Health of Cantabria, Reinhard Wallmann, has launched a message of "tranquility" in the sense that the patient is "stable" and the symptoms "even have been reduced." The health official has pointed out that the woman has a clinical symptomatology compatible with a hemorrhagic fever and has just returned from a trip to Equatorial Guinea, which has "raised the suspicion of a case of Marburg virus disease." Finally, it has been ruled out that you carry the virus in your body.

Wallmann also recalled in his speech that the patient was diagnosed with malaria last year and "that is very compatible with her clinical picture and is the most likely diagnosis." Thus, it presents symptoms typical of Paulism but also rectorragia "and that is a symptom not so typical of malaria, but it may be," he detailed.

During her one-and-a-half-month trip to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea, the patient has been treated for malaria, which "can be a reactivation or reinfection of malaria." "It is the most likely diagnosis," he reiterated, although "there is a possibility that he has acquired another type of gastrointestinal disease that causes that rectal disease," Wallmann said.

    PROTOCOL AGAINST THE VIRUS

As a precautionary measure, and before doing the PCR, the Ministry of Health has indicated that the protocol released last February was being followed with this patient, due to the Marburg outbreak that occurred in Equatorial Guinea, with recommendations and instructions in case suspicion. Faced with a case under investigation or confirmed, the protocol asks for urgent communication to all people/services that will be involved in the management of the patient or his samples, as well as transport of the patient, when required.

Cases under investigation or confirmed must wear a surgical mask from their identification and during transport and hospitalization. In addition, they must enter a single room (with its own bathroom) with a closed door with restricted access to essential personnel for the care and care of the patient and be located in a little traveled area.

Likewise, it is recommended that confirmed cases be treated in one of the hospitals that have High-Level Isolation Units (UAAN). A record must be established with the time of entry and exit of the people who enter the room, as well as the activities carried out at each entrance and the incidents or accidents that occur in them.

People in contact with the possible case must comply with protection measures. In the event of a case that meets the criteria of the case under investigation, the identification of contacts will be initiated, which will be interrupted if the case is discarded after the laboratory results. Likewise, a series of precautions must be followed during the collection, transport and processing of samples.
