    Borna disease OUTBREAK spreading through Germany ? humans at risk as three people killed
    THE BORNA virus which until now had only been seen to infect animals, has killed at least three people in Germany sparking fears the disease could continue to spread through human populations.

    Four cases have been reported in Germany so far and, according to the EU?s Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (CDPC), three of the reports received organ transplants from the same donor.

    The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in Berlin and the scientists believe it is the first confirmed borna virus evidence in humans ever.

    A report from the European Union?s Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said: ?Borna disease virus 1 (BoDV-1) has been associated with human disease in four cases in Germany resulting in the death of three people.

    ?BoDV-1 in humans occurs rarely, however considering the severity of this disease, Member States may consider adding BoDV-1 to the list of pathogens included in the differential diagnosis of causes of human encephalitis.?
