Germany records highest daily COVID-19 infections since mid-May

Germany recorded the highest incidence of coronavirus infections since mid-May on Saturday, reaching the threshold of 100 cases per 100,000 in the past seven days that used to be the yardstick for imposing a strict lockdown.

However, Health Minister Jens Spahn noted that Germany could cope much better now due to vaccination, although he said restrictions like mask wearing and limits on indoor activity for unvaccinated people would stay until next spring.

The seven-day incidence rate of cases – which until August was used to decide whether to impose more stringent COVID-19 curbs – rose to 100 on Saturday from 95 on Friday, the Robert Koch Institute responsible for disease control said.

A total of 15,145 new infections were reported on Saturday, 4,196 more than the same time last Saturday, it added, and another 86 people died, to bring the total to 95,077...

German Health Minister calls for vaccine centres to reopen as Covid numbers surge

Jens Spahn, Germany's health minister, has appealed to the leaders of the federal states to open vaccine centres back up in order to speed up the rate at which elderly people receive their booster jabs against Covid-19.
“The states should now prepare to open the vaccination centers, which have been kept on standby since the end of September,” Spahn told the Rheinische Post newspaper. “We need to do this so that as many people as possible receive a booster vaccination as quickly as possible.”

Spahn also suggested that everyone over 60 should be invited in writing to be vaccinated for a third time. The German government wants to give booster jabs to elderly and chronically ill people in order to pep up their immune response against Sars-Cov-2 ahead of the winter.

Germany seeks to break COVID momentum amid new case records
Germany has recorded its second consecutive daily record for new coronavirus cases as infections pick up across Europe
          By GEIR MOULSON Associated Press
          5 November 2021, 09:38

BERLIN -- Germany recorded its second consecutive daily record for new coronavirus cases on Friday as infections pick up across Europe, and its disease control center said unvaccinated people now face a “very high” risk of infection.

The country saw 37,120 reported new infections over the past 24 hours, according to the disease control center, the Robert Koch Institute. That compared with Thursday's figure of 33,949 — which in turn topped the previous record of 33,777 set on Dec. 18 last year.

While it's possible that the figures were pushed up by delayed testing and reporting following a regional holiday Monday in some of the worst-affected areas, they underlined a steady rise in infections over recent weeks. Another 154 deaths linked to COVID-19 brought Germany's total to 96,346 on Friday.

The country's infection rate has now exceeded its peak during a spike of cases in the spring, though it's still short of the worst-ever showing in December, according to Friday's figures. There have been 169.9 reported cases per 100,000 residents over the past seven days, up from 139.2 a week ago...

Covid-19 - Outbreak of cases in Germany: new restrictions as the incidence rate reaches a level not seen since the start of the epidemic
            ...
Published on 11/08/2021 at 10:56 AM

In total, more than 4.6 million people have been infected in Germany, hit by a fourth "massive" wave affecting mainly the unvaccinated who are now subject to new restrictions in some regions.

The incidence rate measuring the number of new cases of coronavirus per 100,000 inhabitants in Germany reached 201.1 over the past seven days on Monday, a record high since the start of the pandemic a year and a half ago. The latest record stood at 197.6, dating back to December 22, 2020.

A situation which forces the country to further restrictive measures. In the state of Saxony (East), where the incidence rate is more than double the national average at 491.3, unvaccinated people are subject to new restrictions as of Monday.

Access to indoor restaurants and indoor events will be limited to people who are fully vaccinated or who can show proof of recovery from Covid-19.

These new rules are the most restrictive taken at the national level against unvaccinated people. Only children and people who cannot receive vaccines for medical reasons will be exempt.

Despite a large number of people vaccinated, the vaccination rate nevertheless stagnated below 70%, forcing the authorities to call on the population to mobilize. " For the unvaccinated, the risk is high that they will be contaminated in the coming months ", warned Wednesday the head of the Robert Koch (RKI) health watch institute, Lothar Wieler.

"Safety and security don't just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment. We owe our children, the most vulnerable citizens in our society, a life free of violence and fear."

Germany coronavirus: Record rise prompts warning of 100,000 deaths

One of Germany's top virologists has warned that a further 100,000 people will die from Covid if nothing's done to halt an aggressive fourth wave.

Case numbers have soared and Germany on Wednesday registered its highest rate of infection since the pandemic began, with almost 40,000 cases in a day.

"We have to act right now," said Christian Drosten, who described a real emergency situation.

Doctors in the intensive care Covid ward at Leipzig University Hospital warn this fourth wave could be the worst yet.

"The situation is serious and I recommend that everyone takes it as such," German Health Minister Jens Spahn has warned, as he called for rapid action to contain a fourth wave of the coronavirus.

Testing is set to become free once again in Germany in a bid to curb the coroanvirus fourth wave

Germany must do "everything necessary" to break the fourth coronavirus wave, German Health Minister Jens Spahn said on Friday.

"The situation is serious and I recommend that everyone takes it as such," Spahn said. He and Germany's Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for infectious diseases chief Lothar Wieler warned that intensive care bed places in some places were already under pressure or full. They singled out the states of Saxony, Thuringia and Bavaria as most under strain from the fourth wave of infections.

(CNN)Germany's capital Berlin will ban unvaccinated people from restaurants, bars, cinemas and other entertainment venues from Monday, as the country grapples with its highest surge in Covid-19 cases to date.

Health officials reported 50,196 new cases on Thursday, the fourth day in a row in which Germany has broken its record for new infections.

From next week those who are not fully vaccinated will be excluded from a number of entertainment sites in Berlin, the city's Senate announced on Wednesday, as it expanded the so-called "2G" rules that bar people without two shots from entry.

Outdoor events with more than 2,000 visitors will also be off-limits to unvaccinated adults, officials said...
