Romanian Coronavirus Infections Hit Record Daily High
    September 28, 2021 11:29 GMT

The number of new coronavirus infections in Romania -- the EU member state with the second-lowest vaccination rate -- rose by a record 11,049 in the past 24 hours, authorities announced on September 28.

The previous record -- 10,269 infections -- had been registered in November. A total of 1,210,810 cases have been registered in Romania since the start of the pandemic.

There were 208 fatalities over the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths caused by COVID-19 to 36,658.

Romania, a country of some 19.5 million, has vaccinated only a little more than one-third of its adult population amid distrust in state institutions and misinformation campaigns. About 40 percent of medical staff have not been vaccinated and the government is considering making a digital EU COVID-19 passport mandatory for them...

COVID-19 Deaths Hit New Daily Record As Romania Battles 'Catastrophic' Surge
    October 08, 2021 16:09 GMT
    By RFE/RL

Romanian health authorities have reported 385 COVID-19 fatalities, a new record since the start of the pandemic, prompting doctors to urge a new lockdown.

Out of the total number of fatalities, 357 were registered over the past 24 hours while the rest were previous COVID-19 deaths that had not been reported before.

The number of new coronavirus infections in Romania -- with the second-lowest vaccination rate in the European Union -- rose by 13,854 in the past 24 hours.

Romania, one of the poorest countries in the EU, is suffering from a spike in deaths as a fourth wave described as "catastrophic" by President Klaus Iohannis takes hold.

The record -- 15,037 infections -- had been registered on October 5. A total of 1,332,221 cases have been registered in Romania since the start of the pandemic.

Lines of ambulances have been waiting outside several hospitals in Bucharest and the northeastern city of Iasi for beds to become available, television footage showed. Doctors at the infectious-diseases hospital in Iasi on October 8 urged the authorities to impose an immediate lockdown to curb the infections.

Just one intensive-care bed was available on October 8 in the country of 19 million....

Romania's hospitals overwhelmed with unvaccinated patients
By Daniel Bellamy with AP • Updated: 16/10/2021 - 13:42

Romania's health service has been overwhelmed by unvaccinated patients in the midst of a brutal fourth wave of COVID-19.

In Bucharest, ambulances have had to queue outside the Matei Bals Infectious Diseases Hospital where beds are being set up in corridors.

There have been 15,828 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours in a country with a population of about 19 million.

At least 365 people have died in this period and the pandemic death toll now stands at 41,482.

Many Romanians are distrustful of the authorities' pleas to get a vaccine, which is partly a legacy of living under the dictator Nicolae Ceausescu. Many are also susceptible to misinformation circulating online that vaccines are ineffective or worse, dangerous...

Romania on Tuesday hit daily records in both COVID-19 infections and deaths as the country faces an acute virus surge amid alarmingly low vaccination rates.

Authorities confirmed a record high of 18,863 new infections and 574 deaths in one day. It was the first time the European Union nation of 19 million surpassed 500 deaths in a single day.

Romania has the second-lowest vaccination rate in the EU behind Bulgaria — with just 34% of adults fully inoculated against COVID-19, compared to the bloc average of 74%.

BUCHAREST: The Romanian government will reintroduce a night curfew and make health passes mandatory for entry to most public venues from Monday (Oct 25), as well as sending school children on vacation for two weeks, as it seeks to stem a surge in COVID-19 cases and deaths.

The measures, expanding nationwide measures that had mostly already been taken in towns with high case numbers, were approved by the interim government late on Friday.

Romania has reported record numbers of daily coronavirus deaths and infections this month and the hospital system is stretched to breaking point. The country has the second-lowest coronavirus vaccination rate in the European Union.

Romania reaches historic high in Covid deaths
            By Cristian Gherasim
            Bucharest, Today, 07:05

Romania has recorded this week its highest daily number of Covid-19 deaths since the pandemic started.

With close to 600 dead in just 24 hours, the south-eastern European country has the highest mortality rate in the entire European Union.

Over the past several weeks, the 20 million strong nation has been losing about 500 of its citizens daily to Covid, making it the worst-hit country in Europe by this new pandemic wave, and amongst the most impacted nations worldwide.

Coronavirus has been killing one Romanian every five minutes, according to reports of the government-run vaccination committee.

For comparison, no recent catastrophes in Romanian history even come close to the almost 50,000 dead due to Covid in the last 18 months...

Morgues, hospitals struggle with COVID-19 deaths in Romania
‘Wave of the unvaccinated’ grips Eastern European country, as misinformation swirls and public trust in government drops.
              9 Nov 2021

The morgue in Romania’s main hospital has no space for the dead any more. In a stark illustration of the human cost of the coronavirus surge sweeping the nation, bodies of COVID-19 victims, wrapped in black plastic bags, line a hallway of the hospital in the capital, Bucharest.

Hundreds of people have been dying each day for the past two months in Romania. The country has been among the hardest-hit in the current virus onslaught raging through Central and Eastern European nations, where far fewer people have been vaccinated than in Western Europe...
