  • Spain detects American minks with coronavirus - March 2021

Two American minks detected with coronavirus in the Castellón rivers Palancia and Mijares

The Management Consortium of the Protected Landscape of the Mouth of the River Mijares, formed by the municipalities of Almassora, Borriana, Vila-real, the Diputación de Castellón and the Generalitat Valenciana, has canceled the monitoring, surveillance and control works of the American mink (Neovison vison ) by indication of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, Climate Emergency and Ecological Transition after several environmental agents captured two specimens of this exotic species in the Palancia and Mijares rivers, in the latter in the municipality of Torrechiva, with coronavirus.

Thus, the animals were delivered to the Veterinary Faculty of the Cardenal Herrera CEU San Pablo University of Valencia, which, after a first analysis, confirmed the presence of the SARS-COV2 virus in the body of the two mustelids.

Now, to prevent the health of the technicians, environmental agents and rural guards of the Mijares River Consortium, the immediate suspension of the campaign has been decided until a new protocol is available to protect the management of this exotic wild species introduced into the Valencian rivers
