Update on all-cause mortality for the period from June 22 to 28, 2026

Health surveillance data for all-cause mortality for the week of June 22-28, 2026, shows an increase of nearly 30% in all-cause deaths compared to the previous week.

    Published on July 3, 2026

This data comes from the electronic certification of deaths, it incorporates that published on Sunday, June 28, which covered the period from June 24 to 26, and is still partial at this stage.

As part of the Heatwave and Health Alert System (Sacs), a bulletin concerning excess mortality during the June heatwave episode will be published 3 weeks after the end of the heatwave episode.

Public Health France continuously analyzes fluctuations in all-cause mortality throughout the year. This analysis is published weekly in the bulletin "All-Cause Mortality".

What we observe during the week of June 22nd to 28th based on electronic certificates (unconsolidated data):

An increase in all-cause deaths among people aged 45 and over, particularly at home
    • An increase of +29.1%, corresponding to 2,025 additional deaths compared to the previous week (8,973 deaths of all ages and from all causes were recorded during the week of June 22 to 28, 2026, compared to 6,948 during the week of June 15 to 21).
    • An increase that concerns people aged 45 or over (+29.7%, or +2001 deaths) and observed in all types of places of death with a particularly marked increase at home (data to be consolidated): at home (+91%), in nursing homes (+37%) and in health establishments (+19.7%).
An increase in all-cause deaths in the region
    • The number of deaths certified electronically is up compared to the previous week in all metropolitan regions, except in Occitanie and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
    • The increase is particularly observed in Ile-de-France (+62.8%, or +619 deaths), Centre-Val de Loire (+47.3%, or 121 deaths), Normandy (+53.1%, or 216 deaths), Brittany (+36.0%, or +129 deaths), Pays de la Loire (+62.0%, or +178 deaths), Nouvelle-Aquitaine (+28.1%, or +264 deaths) and Hauts-de-France (+27.7%, or +155 deaths).

This surveillance is based on the collection of electronic death certificates; it is not exhaustive and usually records about 60% of mortality.

This analysis is based on two sources of data:
    • One reactive system is based on the collection of electronic death certificates. While not exhaustive, it typically records approximately 60% of national mortality. System coverage remains uneven across regions and, more importantly, depending on the type of death: it records 25% of deaths occurring at home, 45% in nursing homes, and nearly 80% in hospitals. Statistics derived from this source should therefore be interpreted with caution, as the data is likely underestimated, particularly in areas and for death locations with the least coverage, such as deaths at home.
    • The other, requiring a longer consolidation period, relies on a sample of approximately 5,000 civil registry offices, which automatically transmit their data to INSEE. This network covers 84% of national mortality.
The data should be interpreted with caution as they are likely underestimated , particularly for areas and locations of death with the least coverage, such as deaths at home. Consequently, the actual mortality rate will be higher than these initial figures suggest.
This monitoring is reported in a weekly bulletin entitled "All-Cause Mortality".

The health impact is assessed remotely from the weather events according to two timeframes.

Excess mortality from all causes during a heatwave

Based on data from civil registry offices, the estimate of the number of excess all-cause deaths during heatwave episodes is obtained by comparing the observed "all-cause mortality" to an expected reference "all-cause mortality".
As part of the SACS surveillance, an initial estimate of the impact on "all-cause mortality" is carried out and published in a specific bulletin 3 weeks after the end of each heat wave (the time required to consolidate approximately 95% of deaths).

Deaths from all causes attributable to heat

Public Health France has also developed a method to estimate, at the departmental level, the annual mortality attributable to the exposure of the general population to heat, for all ages and for people aged 75 and over.

The aim is to illustrate the impact of heat exposure on all-cause mortality in the general population, and its spatial and temporal evolution. This will complement the heatwave assessment at the end of the summer monitoring period, which currently only considers excess all-cause mortality.

These two estimates are complementary. Estimating excess deaths from all causes during heat waves can capture unexpected or indirect impacts that would not be accurately estimated by calculating the attributable fraction.
