  • Yellow Fever Virus (YFV) in Brazil: nationwide data for EW 22/31 May & data for EW 1-22 per MOH

3240 notified YFV cases with 519 suspected, 792 confirmed, and 1929 discarded cases; 435 notified YFV associated fatalities with 37 suspected, 274 confirmed, and 124 discarded fatalities due to YFV infection reported nationwide as of EW 21/25 May by Brazilian MOH. Mortality rate is 34.59% and thus constant.
Most cases and YFV associated fatalities continue to be reported from the Southeastern region which includes the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Espirito Santo, and Minas Gerais, with the epicentre in Minas Gerais.
Taking into account data provided in the past weeks, the number of both discarded and confirmed cases increased with the total number of suspected cases decreasing, indicating that testing of suspected cases is under way and the authorities are able to verify the diagnosis of suspected cases. The increase in confirmed cases however also indicates continued spread since the decrease of suspected cases does not match the increase in confirmed/discarded cases; consequently, vaccination efforts need to increase.
