Orellana Activates Health Emergency Due to Yellow Fever Case

A confirmed case in Joya de los Sachas prompts increased controls, vaccinations, and the suspension of classes at a school
Joya de los Sachas - The canton of Joya de los Sachas, in the province of Orellana, declared a health emergency after a case of yellow fever was confirmed in a rural area. The case was detected in the community of San Pablo, San Sebastián sector, according to provincial epidemiologist Diana Bonilla.
The Emergency Operations Committee (COE) met to coordinate the response and prevent the virus, transmitted by mosquitoes and endemic to jungle regions, from spreading to urban areas. Authorities warned that low vaccination coverage in some areas increases the risk.
The measures taken include fumigation, elimination of mosquito breeding grounds, community clean-up efforts, and epidemiological surveillance. Yellow fever can cause serious complications, although it is preventable with vaccination.
In-person classes at the Río Coca school were suspended after suspected cases were reported. Students will switch to online learning while disinfection efforts are completed.
