Contra Costa Health reports first West Nile death in county since 2006, urges vigilance

A Contra Costa County man has died from West Nile virus — the first reported county death from the disease since 2006.

Contra Costa Health said Friday in a statement that the victim lived in East County. The death was reported to the county on July 16.

Butte County reports first West Nile virus death of the year

BUTTE COUNTY, Calif. - The Butte County Department of Public Health said they received notification of a death due to complications of the West Nile virus infection.

BCPH said this marks the first human WNV death in 2024 for Butte County. The person was between 40 and 50 years old and suffered from a severe, neuro-invasive WNV illness. The death was reported to BCPH on Monday.

BCPH urges people to protect themselves from WNV by reducing mosquitoes on their property and preventing mosquito bites.

As of August 16, 13 human cases and three WNV-related deaths have been reported in California this year.

Butte County has highest number of human West Nile Virus cases in California

CHICO, Calif. - Butte County has the most human cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) of any county in California in 2024. Seven of the state's 19 WNV cases are in Butte County. No other county has more than two.

Among the three WNV deaths in California this year, one of them was in Butte County. The individual was between 40-50 years old and suffered from a severe, neuro-invasive WNV illness.

Tehama County public health officials announced Friday that one person has died from west Nile virus, the second death in the county from the disease in the past two years.

The person died within the past two weeks and was an "older individual," said Minnie Sagar, the county director of public health. Out of concern for the individual's privacy, Sagar said she did not want to be more specific about the person's age or date of death...

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Fresno County Department of Public Health (FCDPH) has confirmed the first case in Fresno County in 2024 where West Nile Virus (WNV) contributed to a human death.

According to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) in 2024 so far, there have been 38 reported human West Nile cases in California, including four deaths.
