The Secretary of State of Health (Sesapi) confirmed on Tuesday (15) the fourth case of West Nile fever in the state of Piaui . The other three confirmed cases of the disease in the country had also been reported in Piau?. The fourth case was registered in Teresina and, according to the Municipal Health Foundation (FMS), is a female patient who suffered acute encephalitis, inflammation of the nervous system, in April 2019.

“FMS is investigating the possibility of a case acquired in Piau? (indigenous case). This is because the patient was in the municipalities of Cabeceiras - PI and Lagoa Alegre - PI, in the weeks before the illness. She was admitted to the HUT and was discharged after treatment, with neurological sequelae, ”explains FMS neurologist Marcelo Vieira.

    A death

Only one case of the disease led to the patient's death and was reported in the town of Piripiri, 162 km north of Teresina, in June 2017. The patient was an elderly woman. Sesapi reported that she had other associated diseases, so the condition presented complications.

The other two cases already registered of the disease, in Brazil, also happened in Piau?, in 2014 and 2017, without deaths. The patients with the mildest form of the disease were from Aroeiras do Itaim and Picos, cities 28 km apart and 320 km south of Teresina.
