    West Nile fatalities rise to 5 as virus spreads to Athens

    The number of deaths from the West Nile virus has risen to five, it emerged on Thursday as the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (KEELPNO) confirmed that a total of 77 cases of the infection have been recorded in Greece since the beginning of the summer, 17 in the past week.

    The death toll rose following the deaths of two people, both aged over 70, in the past two weeks.

    The virus, which is carried by infected mosquitoes, has also spread geographically, with cases reported in 33 municipalities, including the municipality of Athens...

      he number of dead from the West Nile virus has reached 21 since the beginning of 2018, while a total 178 have been affected by the disease, according to the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention (KEELPNO).

      Of the 178 cases, KEELPNO says, 144 of the victims manifested diseases of the Central Nervous System (encephalitis, meningitis, acute paralysis) and 34 had mild manifestations (febrile illness). The median age of patients with CNS manifestations is 74 years, while the age range of those affected is 10-94 years.

      The recorded cases appeared in all areas of Greece including Athens, Piraeus, Western Attica, Viotia, Halkidiki, Thessaloniki, Evia, Imathia, Aegean Islands, Pella, Evros, Corinthia, Kilkis, Serres, Rodopi and Rethymnon...

        West Nile death toll rises to 31 after 4 more deaths


        Four people died last week as a result of complications after contracting the West Nile virus, bringing the death toll across Greece from the beginning of the year to 31, according to authorities.

        According to a weekly report issued by the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO), reported cases reached 271 over on Satuday.

          The list of victims who have succumbed to the West Nile Virus in Greece continues to grow. According to an announcement by the Hellenic Center for Disease Control & Prevention (KEELPNO), the number of deaths that have resulted from the outbreak of the West Nile Virus (WNV) in Greece has reached 41.

          Six more people died this week after being hospitalized with severe symptoms of encephalitis and meningitis...

            ATHENS, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from complications linked to the West Nile virus in Greece has risen to 44 so far this year, according to the latest count by the Hellenic Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO), local ANT1 TV reported on Friday.

            According to KEEPLNO's most recent report, until Nov. 1, a total of 312 laboratory diagnosed cases had been reported to the center. In 238 cases, patients suffered from neuro-invasive diseases such as encephalitis, meningitis and acute flaccid paralysis, while in 74 cases patients had only mild symptoms.

            All 44 victims were elderly over 63 years old...
