    This week the first confirmed human case of West Nile fever in the EU was reported and detected in southern Greece.
    In the neighbouring countries, three new cases have been detected in Israel of which one is confirmed.

    Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 20 July 2017,one human case of West Nile fever has been reported in the EU.

    In the neighbouring countries, one confirmed case and three probable cases have been reported by Israel.

    This week (week 30) four probable human cases of West Nile fever have been reported in an already affected area in Greece. No new cases have been reported in the neighbouring countrie

    One West Nile fever equidae case has been notified through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) of the European Commission. The case occurred in the Province of Rovigo, North-East of Italy. More information about ADNS is available at: https://ec.europa.eu/food/animals/an.../not-system_en

    Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 27 July 2017, five human cases of West Nile fever (one confirmed and four probable) have been reported by Greece. In the neighbouring countries, one confirmed case and three probable cases have been reported; all of them were reported by Israel.

      Between 28 July and 2 August, one confirmed human case of West Nile fever has been reported in Oristano, Sardinia in Italy. No new cases have been reported in the neighbouring countries.

      Eight West Nile fever equidae cases have been notified through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) of the European Commission, in Argolida, Southern Greece. Human cases have already been reported in the same area this transmission season.

      Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 2 August 2017, five human cases of West Nile fever (one confirmed and four probable) have been reported by Greece and one confirmed case has been reported by Italy. In the neighbouring countries, one confirmed case and three probable cases have been reported by Israel.

      In equidae, nine West Nile fever cases have been notified through ADNS; eight in Argolida, Southern Greece and one in Rovigo, North-East of Italy.

        West Nile fever in Europe in 2017; updated 11 August

        Between 2 August and 10 August, 15 cases were reported in Greece in a previous affected area. Romania and Serbia reported their first cases of the year. Romania reported one confirmed case, in the South-East of the country. Two confirmed cases were reported by Serbia.
        Two cases in Greece died since the beginning of 2017.

        Eight West Nile fever Equidae cases were notified through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) of the European Commission; all in Italy, two in Venezia and six in Padova.

        Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 10 August 2017, 20 human cases of West Nile fever (three confirmed and 17 probable) have been reported by Greece, and one confirmed case has been reported by Italy. Romania reported one case. In the neighbouring countries, six cases have been reported; four by Israel, two by Serbia.

          Situation update, 18 August 2017

          Between 10 August and 17 August, 4 new cases were reported in Greece, in a previously affected area. Italy reported 2 cases in Emilia Romagna region. Three cases were reported by Romania. One new case was reported by Serbia in a newly affected area.

          One West Nile fever Equidae case in Viterbo, Lazio region, Italy, was notified through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) of the European Commission during that period.

          Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 10 August 2017, 24 human cases of West Nile fever (five confirmed and 19 probable) have been reported by Greece; three confirmed cases were reported by Italy and Romania reported four cases. In the neighbouring countries, seven cases were reported: four by Israel and three by Serbia.

          In Equidae, 18 West Nile fever cases were notified through ADNS; ten in Italy, and eight in Argolida, Greece.

            Situation update, 25 August 2017

            Between 17 and 24 August, Greece reported 13 new cases in a previously affected area. .Two cases in newly affected areas were reported by Romania. Austria and Hungary reported their first cases: Austria reported four and Hungary two. Serbia reported a new case in an already affected area.

            In addition, Italy reported nine West Nile fever Equidae cases in Padova and Rovigo through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) of the European Commission.

            Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 24 August 2017, Greece reported 37 (seven confirmed and 30 probable) human cases of West Nile fever, Italy reported three confirmed cases, Romania reported six cases, four cases are reported by Austria. Hungary reported two cases. Israel reported four cases and Serbia four cases.

            In Equidae, Member States reported 27 West Nile fever cases through ADNS, 19 in Italy and eight in Argolida, Greece.

              Situation update, 1 September 2017

              Between 24 and 31 August 2017, Hungary reported three cases in previously affected areas. Italy reported 24 cases in previously affected areas. Ten cases in previously affected areas were reported by Romania. Two cases were reported by Austria and Serbia reported eight cases, all in previously affected areas. Romania reported six deaths, and Greece reported three deaths so far in 2017.

              In addition, Italy reported 17 West Nile fever Equidae cases through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) of the European Commission. One Equidae case was reported in an area where human WNF was already reported. Greece reported two new Equidae WNF cases, both in newly Equidae WNF affected areas.

              Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 31 August 2017, Greece has reported 37 human cases of West Nile fever, Italy reported 27 cases, Romania reported 16 cases, six cases were reported by Austria and five cases by Hungary. Israel reported four cases and Serbia twelve cases.

              In Equidae, Member States reported 46 West Nile fever cases through ADNS, 36 in Italy and ten in Greece.

                Situation update, 8 September 2017

                Between 31 August and 7 September 2017, Greece reported three cases in newly affected areas. Four cases were reported by Hungary in previously affected areas. Romania reported six cases, in which one area was previously not affected. Israel and Serbia reported cases in previously affected areas; Israel reported five cases and Serbia reported seven cases. Serbia reported one death due to West Nile fever.

                In addition, Italy reported 11 West Nile fever Equidae cases and Hungary reported one Equidae case through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) of the European Commission.

                Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 7 September 2017, Greece has reported 40 human cases of West Nile fever, Italy reported 27 cases, Romania reported 22 cases, Hungary reported nine cases and Austria reported two cases. In addition, Serbia reported 19 cases and Israel reported nine cases.

                In Equidae, Member States reported 58 West Nile fever cases through ADNS: 47 in Italy, ten in Greece and one in Hungary.

                  West Nile fever in Europe in 2017; updated 15 September


                  Between 7 September and 14 September 2017, Serbia reported nine cases and Hungary reported one case. All cases were reported in previously affected areas. Greece reported one death due to West Nile fever of a previously reported case.

                  In addition, Italy has reported eight West Nile fever equine cases and Hungary and Greece both reported one equine case through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) of the European Commission.

                  Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 14 September 2017, Greece has reported 40 human cases, Italy has reported 27 cases, Romania 22 cases, Hungary 10 cases and Austria two cases. In addition, Serbia has reported 28 cases and Israel has reported nine cases.
                  In equids, Member States reported 68 West Nile fever cases through ADNS: 55 in Italy, 11 in Greece and two in Hungary.

                    Situation update, 22 September 2017


                    Between 14 and 21 September 2017, Italy reported 20 cases, of which two cases were reported in a newly affected area. Romania reported 17 cases, in which one area is newly affected. Four cases in previously affected areas were reported by Hungary. Greece reported four cases of which two areas are newly affected. One domestically acquired case in Greece with an unknown place of infection has been reported. Romania reported one death due to West Nile fever.

                    In addition, Italy has reported ten West Nile fever equine cases and Hungary reported one equine case through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) of the European Commission.

                    Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 21 September 2017, Italy has reported 47 cases, Greece has reported 45 human cases, Romania 39 cases, Hungary 14 cases and Austria has reported two cases.                       Situation update, 29 September 2017

                      Between 21 and 28 September 2017, six new cases were reported by Romania. Austria reported two cases, Hungary reported two cases, Greece reported two cases and Italy reported two cases. Serbia reported eight new cases. All cases were notified in previously affected areas.

                      Three deaths due to West Nile fever have been reported by Greece, Hungary and Italy this week.

                      In addition, Italy reported eight West Nile fever equine cases and Greece reported one West Nile fever equine case through the Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) of the European Commission.


                      Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 28 September 2017, Italy has reported 49 cases, Greece has reported 47 human cases, Romania 45 cases, Hungary 16 cases and Austria has reported four cases. In addition, Serbia has reported 36 cases, and Israel has reported nine cases. Fifteen deaths due to West Nile fever have been reported since the start of the transmission season: Romania reported seven, Greece reported five, Hungary, Italy and Serbia reported one.

                      In equids, Member States reported 88 West Nile fever cases through ADNS: 73 in Italy, 12 in Greece and three in Hungary.

                        Situation update, 6 October 2017

                        Between 28 September and 5 October 2017, Romania reported nine cases, Italy reported four cases, Hungary reported two cases and Greece reported one case. Serbia and Israel reported nine and eight cases respectively. All cases were notified in areas already considered as affected.
                        Romania reported one death due to West Nile fever.

                        Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 5 October 2017, the EU Member States and the neighbouring countries reported 240 cases: Romania (54 cases), Italy (53), Serbia (45), Greece (48), Hungary (19), Israel (17) and Austria (4).

                        Sixteen deaths due to West Nile fever have been reported since the start of the transmission season: Romania (8 deaths), Greece (5), Hungary (1), Italy (1) and Serbia (1).

                          Between 5 and 12 October 2017, Romania reported six cases, Croatia reported five cases, Bulgaria and Serbia both reported one case. One of the case reported in Croatia is in a newly affected area. All other cases were notified in areas already considered as affected.

                          Three deaths were reported due to West Nile fever, two by Romania and one by Croatia.

                          Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 12 October 2017, the EU Member States reported 189 cases: Romania (60 cases), Italy (53), Greece (47), Hungary (19), Croatia (5), Austria (4) and Bulgaria (1). Sixty-three cases were reported in the neighbouring countries: Serbia (46) and Israel (17). Nineteen deaths due to West Nile fever have been reported since the start of the transmission season: Romania (10 deaths), Greece (5), Hungary (1), Italy (1), Croatia (1) and Serbia (1).

                            West Nile fever in Europe in 2017; updated 20 October

                            Between 12 and 19 October 2017, Turkey reported five cases and Romania reported two cases. Greece and Italy both reported one case.

                            One of the cases reported in Turkey is in a newly affected area. All other cases were notified in areas already considered to be affected.


                            Turkey also reported one death due to West Nile fever.


                            Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 19 October 2017, the EU Member States reported 193 cases: Romania (62 cases), Italy (54), Greece (48), Hungary (19), Croatia (5), Austria (4) and Bulgaria (1).

                            Sixty-eight cases were reported in neighbouring countries: Serbia (46), Turkey (5) and Israel (17). Twenty deaths due to West Nile fever have been reported since the start of the transmission season: Romania (10 deaths), Greece (5), Hungary (1), Italy (1), Croatia (1), Serbia (1), Turkey (1).

                              Between 26 October and 2 November 2017, Hungary reported one case in Budapest. Eleven new cases were reported by Israel. All cases were notified in areas already considered to be affected. In addition, Hungary reported one death due to West Nile fever in a previously reported case.

                              Since the beginning of the 2017 transmission season and as of 2 November 2017, the EU Member States reported 198 cases: Romania (64 cases), Italy (55), Greece (48), Hungary (20), Croatia (5), Austria (4), France (1) and Bulgaria (1).
