    105 cases of scrub typhus detected in last two months

    Kathmandu, August 3

    A total of 105 persons have tested positive for scrub typhus across the country in the last two months.

    According to Epidemiology and Disease Control Division, cases of scrub typhus were recorded in 27 districts of the country. Dr Bibek Kumar Lal, director at EDCD, said the number of scrub typhus patients had increased this year in comparison to last year. ?In 2017, 168 people had tested positive for scrub typhus. Of them, only two had died, while this year more than a hundred persons have already been diagnosed with the disease in just two months,? he added.

    Twenty cases have been recorded in Chitwan, 14 cases in Nawalparasi and 10 cases in Palpa. ?Infected chiggers are, especially, found during the wet season in dense areas of scrub vegetation which is when the mites lay their eggs.     A total of 82 persons were found infected with scrub typhus in the past month in Chitwan.

    Pest Controller Ram KC at District Public Health Office, Chitwan, said the disease was detected in 82 patients while examining the blood of 431 patients visiting various health facilities of the district. The number of patients infected with the disease was 410 while examining the blood of 2,237 patients in the fiscal 2017-18...

      A total of 145 out of 802 people whose blood was checked in the past two months have tested positive for scrub typhus, said the District Public Health Office, Chitwan.

          Scrub typhus spreads after earthquake

          Three months after two massive earthquakes struck Nepal in 2015, BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences, Dharan alerted the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division about six children with unusual fever and severe respiratory features.

          Four children died during treatment as serum samples were collected for subsequent tests in Kathmandu and Bangkok that confirmed a scrub typhus outbreak. By the end of the year, 101 cases were confirmed in 16 districts and four more people succumbed to the disease.

          ?Nepal had never reported so many cases of scrub typhus at once and we also lacked specialists to deal with the disease,? former director at the division, Dr Baburam Marasini told the Post.
