Mayor Freddy Kapuya confirmed the typhoid reports recorded in Rutendo high-density suburb, which he attributed to the acute shortage of water being experienced in the Midlands town.

?We have serious problems with water supply owing to the debts on water, which Redcliff owes to Kwekwe City Council because our residents are failing to service their bills..

                      TYPHOID HITS MUTARE
                      Thursday, January 12, 2017 NewsdzeZimbabwe

MUTARE City Council?s health department has raised alarm bells and activated its disease surveillance system after it recorded one case of typhoid this week.

This came as the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) accused the government and Harare City Council of failing to come up with sustainable intervention measures to curb the typhoid outbreak.

Mathew Chiduka, a senior official at Mutare council?s health department, told management on Tuesday that the city was now on high alert for the waterborne disease, which has claimed two lives in Harare and left dozens others hospitalised...

The typhoid outbreak has spread to Budiriro and Glen View suburbs amid reports that the MDC-T led Harare City Council bungled on its 48-hour ultimatum of removing illegal food vendors from the streets. The ultimatum expired on Thursday. Two cases had been confirmed in each of the two suburbs as of yesterday.

Health Services director Dr Prosper Chonzi said as from Tuesday, confirmed cases of typhoid had gone up from 22 to 25.

Dr Chonzi also said 320 people had presented themselves for screening from the previous 280, while suspected cases of typhoid rose to 150 from 132. He said he expected the numbers to rise as the city was still awaiting results from the laboratory.

"We fear for further typhoid outbreaks as the drivers of the disease are still to be dealt with," he said. "We are expecting more results as there are specimens which are still in the laboratory."...

HARARE, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- A fresh typhoid outbreak has been recorded in Harare's oldest, impoverished suburb of Mbare where at least 18 cases of the waterborne disease have been confirmed, an official said Tuesday.

"I can confirm that we are experiencing an outbreak of typhoid in Harare and the epicenter is Matapi hostels in Mbare," City of Harare Health Director Prosper Chonzi was quoted as saying by the state-run news agency New Ziana.

"So far we have confirmed around 18 patients with salmonella typhoid. Others I believe are still incubating as you know the incubation period for typhoid is 21 days," said Chonzi.

Chonzi said there were no deaths recorded from the current outbreak, which started at the weekend...

In an interview, City of Harare?s Health Services Director, Dr Prosper Chonzi, said the outbreak was as a result of contaminated boreholes, which now have been decommissioned. Dr Chonzi said that it was disheartening to note that residents were failing to practise good personal hygiene, a case in point being Kuwadzana where municipal water was running at the time of the typhoid outbreak...
