Mesa County woman diagnosed with tularemia after recreating in the Ruby-Horsethief Canyon area along the Colorado River

The Bureau of Land Management and the Southeast Utah Department of Health are urging Grand County residents to take extra precautions while in areas where wildlife is active after three people who had recently spent time in the Ruby-Horsethief section of the Colorado River were later diagnosed with tularemia, a rare infectious disease also known as ?rabbit fever.?
The Mesa County Health Department in Grand Junction, Colorado, confirmed on Aug. 20 that a second Mesa County woman had been diagnosed with the bacterial infection. Health department officials said the woman was likely infected through a bite from a deer fly or a tick while she was in Ruby-Horsethief Canyon on the river in Colorado. Two other people, one adult and one child, were also diagnosed with the infections after they had also spent time along the Colorado River during the same time period as the Mesa County woman who was most recently infected...
