    TB outbreak in Nain soars to 50 cases

    Fifty people in Nain are now being treated for tuberculosis, up from six suspected cases in April ? although health officials say the spread of the disease is showing signs of slowing.

    There are 23 people with either confirmed or suspected active cases, as well as 27 people with latent TB, meaning they don't have any symptoms but still require medication.

    "The number we've been picking up has been slowing down over recent weeks," said Dr. Gabe Woollam, the vice-president of medical services with Labrador-Grenfell Health...

    Health officials in Nain say screening efforts for tuberculosis are being expanded to prevent further spread of the disease, after dozens of cases have been reported.

    Sylvia Doody, director of health services with the Nunatsiavut government, said they've been working hard to follow up active cases since the death of 14-year-old Gussie Bennett in March.

    "To date we have a total of 25 cases, 19 cases of which are lab confirmed, and six clinical cases of TB as well," she told CBC Radio's Labrador Morning...
