HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L. ? The medical officer of health for the Labrador-Grenfell Health Authority says the area is dealing with the biggest outbreak of tuberculosis in Labrador in about a decade.
Dr. Muna ar-Rushdi says outbreaks of TB are not unusual in Labrador, but can?t say why they are seeing so many cases at one time.
Officials say 14 cases have been diagnosed ? about double the number of cases seen during the last outbreak between 2006 and 2008.
The cases are mainly on the north coast with some in central Labrador, and some of the victims are children.
Ar-Rushdi says officials are contacting those who have been in touch with people diagnosed with the disease, which can be treated with antibiotics.
