      SACRAMENTO-

The Sacramento County public health officer says 500 additional students and staff will be tested for tuberculosis at Grant Union High School.

The school reported in February that a student had an active case of TB. Because the disease is transmitted through the air, those who had closest contact with the student were tested. A high percentage showed signs of the disease.

?Forty-seven out of about 200 students tested positive with a skin test,? Public Health Officer Dr. Olivia Kasirye said.

The forty-seven had a non-contagious version called latent TB...

Grant Union High School is in the midst of a tuberculosis outbreak, Sacramento County health officials said today.

After previously reporting only one case of active TB, officials said four more students tested positive for the active disease, which attacks the lungs and can be fatal. Scientists consider three related tuberculosis cases an outbreak, said Sacramento County Public Health Officer Olivia Kasirye.

The health department has tested nearly 500 students and school employees since a student at the school tested positive for active TB in February.

The health department has diagnosed 120 people at Grant High with latent tuberculosis, which has no symptoms and is not infectious but can become active after a long period of dormancy. Twenty-four of those have completed treatment and 55 others are being treated...

A California high school is at the center of a tuberculosis outbreak linked to an infectious student who tested positive for active TB in February, county health officials said Wednesday.

Four more students at Grant Union High School in Sacramento have contracted active TB. Three related tuberculosis cases are considered an outbreak, Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services spokeswoman Laura McCasland said.

In the shadows of Grant Union High School, The 3 B?s barbershop hosts Little League sign-ups, fundraising carwashes and community association meetings.

These days, the red stucco shop is where people come to talk about tuberculosis.

Shannon Daniel, who works at the barbershop, lamented that his son was one of 120 students and employees diagnosed with a noninfectious form of the disease. ?As a parent, I?m frustrated that my kid contracted something from school,? Daniel said as he ran his clippers through a child?s hair last week.

Del Paso Heights residents have been on edge since a Grant student attended school in February with active tuberculosis. She had the more serious form that attacks the lungs and can be fatal. Many have complained that school and county officials were slow to release information and that the health department waited too long to offer free schoolwide testing that they feel might have slowed the contagion. A community meeting for them to air their concerns is scheduled for Thursday...

                  SACRAMENTO-

Three dozen students and staff at Grant Union High School have tested positive for exposure to tuberculosis in the latest round of testing.

Of the more than 450 people screened last week, about 200 students had been in the same classrooms as the initial student who tested positive for TB in March, or in rooms that shared air circulation systems...
