Student diagnosed with lung infection

Hundreds of students at Center High School in Antelope will be tested for exposure to tuberculosis next week, after one student came down with an active case of the bacterial lung infection.
Parents of 270 students scheduled for TB skin tests were sent notification letters on Friday. Those singled out for the screening attend one or more classes with the student who is ill with the disease.
Each will need parental permission to be tested, said Dr. Glennah Trochet, Sacramento County health officer.

"This happens periodically in Sacramento," Trochet said. "Once we know about a case, we have an opportunity to treat them. This is a perfectly curable disease."
Neither school nor county health officials would reveal the ill student's name, age, gender or ethnicity, citing confidentiality concerns.
A school nurse at the 1,600-student high school was informed of the student's condition last Thursday, and contacted the county health department for guidance.
Health care providers are required by law to report any case of TB to the county health department.
"From there, they took over and walked us through the process," said Scott Loehr, assistant superintendent with the Center Unified School District.
Trochet said the screening, which will take place at the school, involves the injection of a tiny bit of fluid just under the skin of the forearm.
