First case of screwworm in bird in Oaxaca
Infection detected in San Pedro Tapanatepec
Yadira Sosa by Yadira Sosa Wednesday, November 12, 2025 - 6:52 AM
Oaxaca reported its first case of screwworm myiasis in a bird from San Pedro Tapanatepec in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, which remains active to date, but is under surveillance and treatment by the authorities
In the country, the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica) reports a total of 10 cases of screwworm myiasis in birds, of which six have been in Chiapas, two in Veracruz, one in Oaxaca, and one in Tabasco.
Overall, the federal agency reported 162 new cases of screwworm myiasis in the last week in Oaxaca, with a total of 1,284 from April to November.
Of this number, 1,037 have been in cattle, 75 in dogs, 66 in horses, 70 in swine, 24 in sheep, 11 in goats, and one in a bird.

The risk of GBG establishing itself in Nuevo León is minimal.
National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality | December 1, 2025 The case involves a livestock movement, so the infestation occurred before the cattle arrived in Nuevo León.
Senasica reports that, as a result of a notification made by veterinary medical personnel from an authorized feedlot in Montemorelos, Nuevo León, a case of myiasis caused by the cattle screwworm (GBG) in a female bovine from southern Veracruz was promptly addressed.
The emergency protocol for handling cases in the disease-free zone was immediately activated, with official personnel inspecting the affected area, collecting samples for remote diagnosis, and administering the appropriate treatments. No other affected animals were identified, confirming that this is an isolated case that was promptly contained.
Based on the technical analysis carried out by specialists from Senasica, it is concluded that:
The case corresponds to a mobilization, so the infestation occurred before the arrival of the cattle in Nuevo León.
The area maintains an active sterile fly release polygon, which acts as a biological barrier that inhibits insect reproduction.
Immediate actions such as cleaning, larvicidal treatment, spray baths, and thorough inspection of the lot minimized any possibility of dissemination.
The current climatic conditions of Montemorelos (temperatures between 11 and 20°C and altitude close to 500 meters above sea level) are not conducive to the survival and reproduction of the insect.
Based on these elements, Senasica determines that the risk of GBG establishment in Nuevo León is minimal and that the epidemiological situation is under control

Immediate action and inter-institutional coordination in the GBG case in Tamaulipas
SRU-188-2025
December 31, 2025
Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas.- The Secretariat of Rural Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Government of the State of Tamaulipas informs the livestock community, the productive sectors and the public that the first positive case of Cattle Screwworm (GBG) has been confirmed in the state territory, and the corresponding health protocols have been immediately activated for its care and control.
The head of the state agency, Antonio Varela Flores, announced that the discovery was made in the Emiliano Zapata ejido, in the municipality of Llera de Canales, in a six-day-old calf. According to preliminary investigations, this is an isolated case and not native to the area, as there is no evidence of the presence of the Cochliomyia hominivorax fly, the vector responsible for this pest, in the official trapping network.
Under the principle of maximum sanitary precaution, an inter-institutional response protocol was immediately activated, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER); the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA); the Mexico-United States Commission for the Prevention of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and other Exotic Animal Diseases (CPA); the Tamaulipas Regional Livestock Union (UGRT); the State Committee for the Promotion and Protection of Livestock in Tamaulipas (CFPPT); as well as the municipality of Llera.
With the aim of safeguarding the state's health status, a Strategic Sanitary Cordon was implemented, based on four lines of action: Zoning and movement control: A Focal Area was delimited with a radius of 20 kilometers from the point of detection, as well as a Perifocal Area or buffer zone extending up to 40 kilometers. In both zones, the movement of livestock is restricted without prior official inspection.
Epidemiological surveillance and sanitary sweep: Official brigades carry out an intensive sanitary sweep, property by property and house by house, with exhaustive clinical inspections in backyard species and large livestock for the timely detection of myiasis or lesions compatible with the vector.
Prophylaxis and metaphylactic treatment: Mass administration of 1% ivermectin was initiated to 100% of the bovine population of the affected herd and adjacent properties, with the aim of interrupting the biological cycle of the parasite and reducing the susceptibility of the cattle.
Intensive entomological monitoring: The installation of vane-type traps was increased at strategic points in the focal and perifocal zones. Georeferencing and continuous analysis of this data will allow for real-time evaluation of vector activity and the effectiveness of the implemented measures.
The Government of the State of Tamaulipas, led by Américo Villarreal Anaya, reaffirms its commitment to animal health, biosecurity, and the protection of the productive assets of livestock farmers. It also urges the livestock sector to immediately report any suspected cases of screwworm infestation or lesions to the appropriate health authorities, in order to act promptly and prevent the spread of this pest.

A case of screwworm was reported on December 27 in a six-day-old calf in Tamaulipas, 197 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border, the first such case in that state.
According to Sid Miller, Texas agriculture commissioner, the case was identified on December 27 by Mexico's National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA).
“The continued detections of screwworm near the Texas border are a stark reminder of the serious threat this pest poses to our state. Thanks to the efforts of USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins and APHIS, working in coordination with Mexico, its northward spread has been halted, and this recent case appears to be an isolated incident, for now,” Miller said in a statement.
The screwworm is a small, flesh-eating parasite that lives in the muscles of mammals, which can die if left untreated. Although it can rarely affect humans, the flies that spread it more commonly prefer livestock.
The fly lays its eggs in open wounds, on the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose, or rectum, Dr. Iván Meléndez explained in a previous interview. Furthermore, removing the parasite from the muscle is very difficult, and the only treatment is mechanical extraction, the expert added.
Un pequeño parásito que come carne y es conocido como el gusano barrenador causó que el Departamento de Agricultura de Estados Unidos prohibiera la importación de ganado proveniente de México.

GONZÁLEZ, Tamps. (apro).– There are now three confirmed cases of screwworm in cattle in Tamaulipas, after health authorities detected a new infection in the municipal seat of González, the first recorded in this municipality.
This latest finding adds to the previously confirmed cases in Llera and Altamira, a situation that keeps the livestock sector of the state on alert due to the risk of the parasite spreading.
The identification was made possible thanks to the coordinated work between the Municipal Directorate of Rural Development, CPA-SENASICA personnel and the State Secretariat of Rural Development, who immediately activated the sanitary control protocols.
Following the confirmation, Mayor Miguel Alejandro Zúñiga Rodríguez led an urgent meeting with federal and state authorities and international organizations, including OIRSA, with the aim of strengthening containment efforts.
The mayor highlighted that, as a preventative measure, the local government had implemented information and training campaigns for producers, in addition to delivering more than 800 kits containing healing agent and larvicide.
Additionally, veterinary care was provided to more than 25 animals with wounds, in which the presence of the parasite was not detected, allowing for a faster response to the confirmed case.
Representatives from SENASICA emphasized the importance of inter-institutional work and agreed to intensify surveillance through a sanitary cordon and constant monitoring, in order to promptly detect any other possible outbreaks and reduce the economic impact on livestock activity.
According to official records, the first case in the state was registered on December 25, 2025, in a calf from the Emiliano Zapata ejido, in the municipality of Llera; subsequently, a second case was confirmed in Altamira, in a horse with a knee injury. In both cases, immediate attention allowed the situation to be kept under control.
Authorities reiterated their call for producers to constantly inspect their animals and report any suspicious wounds. They indicated that, if no new cases appear in the coming weeks, Tamaulipas could move forward in regaining its sanitary status as a screwworm-free state, a key condition for the stability and competitiveness of the livestock sector.
Tras la confirmación, el alcalde Miguel Alejandro Zúñiga Rodríguez encabezó una reunión urgente con autoridades federales, estatales y organismos internacionales, entre ellos el OIRSA, con el objetivo de reforzar las acciones de contención.

A third case of screwworm was confirmed in the municipality of González, which is why preventive health measures have been intensified, such as sweeping , deworming of livestock and including the inspection of domestic animals in the southern zone.
The Secretary of Rural Development for the State, Antonio Varela Flores , assured that these are isolated cases and not an outbreak, establishing measures for their control and to prevent new cases.
He insisted that controlling the screwworm in cattle is a priority, which is why the inspection has been extended to include horses and mules used in cargo carts in the southern part of the state.
In that regard, he added the need to check pets since any that may be present could be used by the worm for its development.
He mentioned that of more than 20 reported cases , only three have been confirmed positive since the end of December. This third finding comes while work is underway to potentially inactivate the previously reported cases in Llera and Altamira, suggesting they could be of foreign origin, after the worm was no longer present within a 20- and 40-kilometer radius of where the first two cases were found, and after measures such as fumigation were implemented.
This is how they control the screwworm.
The main strategy is the intensive " Sweep ", which involves the exhaustive review, house by house and property by property, within a focal area of 20 kilometers radius around the detection point, extending up to 40 kilometers in the perifocal zone.
Varela Flores stressed that all warm-blooded animals are checked and those with any wound or laceration are treated, including working horses and mules, as well as dogs, by applying ivermectin.
Meanwhile, the Health Department is assisting with fumigation in the areas where the cattle screwworm has been detected. Among other things, it was noted that residents, especially in Tampico and Madero, are helping by deworming their pets.
The head of Rural Development reiterated that the ultimate goal is to contain the outbreak to ensure that the detected cases are not local and to maintain the health of the state's livestock sector.

January 15, 2026
Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas.— With the goal of safeguarding the state's sanitary status and protecting livestock production, the Secretariat of Rural Development, Fisheries and Aquaculture is working in coordination with the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (SENASICA) and the Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) on the implementation of a comprehensive action plan for the eradication of the Cattle Screwworm (CSM) in the state
The head of the state agency, Antonio Varela Flores, indicated that these actions will strengthen Tamaulipas's health status by establishing a strategic plan with a series of measures focused primarily on the municipalities where the first cases were detected. He emphasized that the state's most important livestock region, comprised of the municipalities of Aldama and Soto la Marina, will be protected.
He also explained that they are working on establishing an intensive trapping network in strategic municipalities, following an epidemiological pattern to prevent the entry of the Cochliomyia hominivorax fly, the vector responsible for this pest. To this end, he emphasized the importance of interstate coordination, particularly with the state of San Luis Potosí.
As a result of this situation, the corresponding health protocols for the care and control of the Cattle Screwworm have been activated immediately, with the aim of safeguarding the state's health status and protecting livestock production.
He stated that the Government of the State of Tamaulipas, headed by Governor Américo Villarreal Anaya, reaffirms its commitment to animal health and to protecting the productive activity of Tamaulipas livestock farmers.
