Tunisia – No less than 33 cases of rabies recorded in Nabeul

    ForLM | August 26, 2024 at 10:07 p.m.

The head of the animal production department of the regional agricultural commission of Nabeul, Mohamed Hamdouni, indicated that "33 positive cases were detected among carnivores and some horses and cattle, which were found to be infected with rabies after laboratory analysis of a total of 57 samples sent to the Pasteur Institute.

Hamdouni explained: “The infection is transmitted to humans mainly through saliva, either by licking, biting, scratching, or by the spray of animal saliva that passes through the human mouth.” Regarding the prevention of rabies in case of attack by an infected animal, licking or other methods of contamination, Hamdouni stressed that “the site of infection should be washed with soap and water for at least 15 minutes and contact the nearest health service.”

In a related context, he indicated that “so far, 29,500 animals have been vaccinated, with an estimated coverage rate of 65%,” stressing that “awareness-raising operations are being carried out in partnership with some associations and the regional health administration, and the official national vaccination campaign will be presented in a month.” It will be launched on October 1, 2024.

Hamdouni stressed that “six centers have been assigned to vaccinate animals,” calling on citizens to go to these centers to prevent and limit the spread of this disease (Department of Animal Production of Nabeul, Grombalia, Hammamet, Soliman Korba and Kelibia), in addition to the assignment of 3 mobile teams to work on the circular vaccination route in the countryside.

277 outbreaks of rabies have been recorded since the beginning of 2024

    11/09/2024 |

61,645 dogs and cats have been vaccinated (more than 48,000 dogs and 13,500 cats), as part of the national campaign to combat rabies. This was announced on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, by the General Directorate of Veterinary Services within the Ministry of Agriculture during a press conference, reported the same day the Tap news agency.

Veterinarian Héni El Haj Amor said that 277 outbreaks of the disease have been recorded since the beginning of 2024.

The day before, the dean of veterinarians, Ahmed Rejeb, revealed that at least 280 cases of animal deaths due to rabies, including 29 cows, have been recorded since the beginning of 2024 and until September 10, 2024. The veterinarian noted that when an animal is sick in a herd, the entire herd must be slaughtered to avoid taking any risks and the farm can be quarantined, rabies being a contagious disease, which can be transmitted to humans and which causes serious economic damage.

The latest report shows nine people have died since the beginning of the year from rabies infection . A rather heavy toll, knowing that the year is not over and that five years ago there were one or two deaths at most throughout the year, from this deadly disease.

It should also be noted that the national rabies vaccination campaign was brought forward to the beginning of September 2024 and will continue until the end of October in all governorates of the Republic. However, Ahmed Rejeb believes that it is impossible to achieve the objectives set for this campaign : vaccinating 80% of domestic animals within two months.

Thirteen cases of animal rabies in Béja

    09/18/2024 |

The veterinarian and director of hygiene and environment of the municipality of Béja, affirmed, in a statement granted, Wednesday, September 18, 2024, to Mosaïque FM, that thirteen cases of animal rabies have been recorded in the governorate.

She stressed that the municipality is currently working to eliminate black spots where stray dogs and cats gather, calling on citizens not to throw waste near the containers and to have their pets vaccinated.

The number of deaths in humans due to rabies infection has risen to nine cases since the beginning of the year. Pasteur Institute officials and veterinarians have warned of an alarming situation.

Tunisia has not seen such a figure for thirty years.
Experts explained that intensive vaccination campaigns have already proven their effectiveness and that Tunisia was able, at one point, to eradicate rabies.
