    Sarawak rabies outbreak claims lives of two young siblings, aged four and six

    KUCHING: Two young siblings infected by rabies following an outbreak at Kampung Paon, Sungai Rimu, Serian, passed away within minutes of each other today.

    The chidren, a four-year-old boy and his six-year-old sister, died at 1.43pm and 1.46 PM respectively, at the Sarawak General Hospital.

    This was confirmed by State Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian, who said the siblings were among three confirmed cases reported in the state last week...

      Health Ministry confirms fourth rabies victim following lab results
      July 12, 2017, Wednesday

      KUCHING: The Health Ministry has confirmed the fourth rabies victim ? a five-year-old girl from Kampung Ampungan in Serian.

      This follows the first three cases detected last month comprising siblings from Kampung Paon Rimu ? a six-year-old girl and her four-year-old brother, both pronounced dead on July 4 ? and another girl, aged seven, from

      Kampung Lebur in Gedong who is still in critical condition and is being placed at the Intensive care Unit (ICU) of Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) here.

      According to Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, all four victims are from Serian Division...

        Three areas declared as new rabies infected areas
        July 19, 2017, Wednesday


        KUCHING: Three areas ? Siburan town, Kampung Temong Mura in Tebedu and Rumah Janta Punggu Mawang in Sri Aman ? were declared new rabies-infected areas yesterday.

        According to a statement from the State Disaster Management Committee, an integrated operation organised by Minister of Local Government and Housing and State Veterinary Services Department is being carried out at Kota Sentosa, Kota Padawan and Siburan, after Siburan was declared a rabies infected area.

        The statement also said no new cases were reported.

        It further said areas within 10km from Kampung Ampungan, Kampung Mentong Berawan, Kampung Mentong Silaga, Kampung Engkabang, Kampung Tampek Sumpas, Kampung Rasau, Bandar Serian and 45th Mile Kuching-Sri Aman road were still rabies positive areas.

        To date, a vaccination exercise has been carried out on 9,185 animals, ? 2,656 dogs, 6,491 cats and 38 other types of animals by the state Veterinary Services Department.

        The committee advised people not to allow their pets to roam freely though they have been vaccinated with anti-rabies vaccines.

        A total of 146 new dog bites were detected between July 2 and yesterday, including 49 cases happening yesterday, bringing the cumulative figure to 415 cases since April 1, and 298 people have turned up for vaccination...

          PETALING JAYA: The rabies outbreak in Sarawak has now claimed its fifth victim after a 52-year-old man succumbed to the virus

          Health Ministry said the man from Kampung Remun, Serian, was confirmed to have the virus on July 18 and died last night at 10.34pm.

          "The cause of death is rabies with underlying tuberculosis. Until today (July 24) there has been five cases of rabies which was identified, and all victims have died from the virus. All the incidences were reported in Serian, Sarawak, and there has been no new cases reported so far," Health director general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a statement this morning.

          Twenty areas in three parts in Sarawak ? Serian, Sri Aman and Kuching ? have been declared as rabies infected areas among the animals by the state government...

            SHAH ALAM, Feb 6 ? The rabies outbreak in Sarawak is under control although there was a death from rabies epidemic on Sunday.

            Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the 59-year-old man was an old case in which he was bitten by a dog in November last year.

            ?The rabies outbreak is still under control, I advise anyone infected with a dog bite to get immediate treatment at a government clinic or hospital...
