Polio case in Jacobabad takes year’s tally to 64

ISLAMABAD: The country has reported another case of polio, raising the tally for the current year to 64.

According to an official of the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health, the lab confirmed a case from Jacobabad on Wednesday.

“This is the fourth polio case of the year from Jacobabad. Pakistan is responding to the resurgence of WPV1 this year with 64 cases reported so far. Of these, 26 are from Balochistan, 18 each from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad,” the official said...

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Deadly violence against polio vaccination workers and their police escorts in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province has claimed 20 lives and injured 53 others this year alone, health officials report.

Since 2012, these targeted attacks have resulted in the deaths of 112 people and left more than 300 injured, highlighting the persistent dangers faced by health workers in the country.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan reported two more polio cases on Thursday, taking the number of cases so far this year to 67.

An official of the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health confirmed two cases of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) from Tank and Kashmore.

This is the fourth polio case from Tank and second from Kashmore this year.

Pakistan has seen a resurgence of WPV1 this year, with 67 cases reported so far. Of these, 27 were from Balochistan, 19 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 19 from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad.

The new cases were confirmed two days after a child from Balochistan’s Qila Abdullah district was crippled by the disease.

Apart from the 67 reported cases, the presence of poliovirus has been detected in environmental samples collected from more than 80 districts...

Pakistan on Monday reported a new polio case in Dera Ismail Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, taking the year’s tally to 68, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) said in a statement.

Pakistan is one of the last two countries in the world, alongside Afghanistan, where polio remains endemic, with the disease mostly affecting children under five, and sometimes causing lifelong paralysis. Despite global efforts to eradicate the virus, challenges such as security issues, vaccine hesitancy, and misinformation have slowed progress.

On Saturday, the wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) was detected in environmental samples collected from 26 already infected districts.

“The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Monday confirmed the detection of the 68th wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case of 2024 from the country in DI Khan,” the statement said.

Polio case detected in Karachi as 2024 tally reaches 70

KARACHI (Web Desk) - Pakistani health authorities reported the country’s 70th poliovirus case of 2024 on Thursday, saying that its symptoms started becoming apparent in a child last month in Karachi, the polio eradication programme said.

As per the programme, the onset of this case was on Dec 21, 2024 and the case was reported in the Karachi East district. With the latest case, the district has now reported two polio cases from 2024.

“The Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health has confirmed the detection of wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) in a male child from Karachi East,” the program said in a statement.

As per the latest toll, out of the 70 poliovirus cases of 2024, 27 have been reported from Balochistan, 21 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 20 from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Islamabad...

KP reports another polio case

PESHAWAR: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reported another polio case on Wednesday, making a total of 72 cases in 2024 in the country.

According to the Health Department, the new polio case was reported in Dera Ismail Khan.

A 20-month-old baby girl was diagnosed with the poliovirus. As per the history from the parents, the child developed high-grade fever on December 28, 2024 and was taken to a health care provider on December 30.

On December 31, the mother noticed weakness in the left upper limb and neck muscles....

First polio case from Thatta takes tally to 73

ISLAMABAD: The country reported a polio case on Thursday, marking the second consecutive day of new cases and bringing the tally for 2024 to 73.

An official at the Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication at the National Institute of Health confirmed the detection of the 73rd wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) case from Thatta.

“This is the first polio case from Thatta for 2024. Since the sample was collected in December last year, the case has been categorised as part of last year’s tally. The incubation period for the sample is nearly three weeks, which can extend further during the winter season,” the official explained.

It is worth mentioning that while hundreds of samples are received at the lab, only a few test positive for the virus, and it takes about three weeks to confirm whether a child is infected with polio...
