    Polio Contracted by 6 More Afghan Children

    The Afghan Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) on Monday announced the registration of 6 new polio cases, bringing the total number of polio cases among Afghan children to 11 this year.

    The Health Ministry said that the main reason behind the spike in cases is that children are not vaccinated.

    According to Ministry of Public Health, new cases of polio were registered in Kandahar, Badakhshan, Balkh and Herat provinces...

    Although the overall cases this year, 14, were less compared to 26 that were reported last year, however, the areas where polio is spreading remain a concern

    The threat of coronavirus is not the only concern for Afghanistan as the country recently detected polio in regions which were earlier declared free of this life-threatening disease.

    The provinces of Balkh, Herat and Badakhshan have reported one case each of polio.

    Jan Rasekh, a spokesperson of Afghanistan's polio eradication programme, said that these three provinces have not reported a single case for up to five years...

      Polio is still taking victims in Afghanistan

      KABUL: The United Nations International Emergency Children's Fund (UNICEF) says that the deadly Polio still takes victims from Afghan children.

      The UNICEF said Saturday on the occasion of Polio Day that some 2.5 million children are deprived from taking Polio vaccination in Afghanistan every year...

      ...Mir Jan Rasekh, head of Polio program in the ministry of public health says that they had registered 53 cases since the beginning of this year.

      '35 of 53 Polio cases were found in the southern zone, while in the west, we had eight cases, in the eastern provinces there were six and two others were found in the north and northeastern provinces,' he said.

        When Saidgul was around 6 months old this past March, his parents decided to take him to Herat, a city about 80 miles from their hometown in Shindand District in Herat Province in western Afghanistan. The road between the two towns is partially unpaved and can be treacherous, infested with Taliban checkpoints.

        In Herat, they hoped to get Saidgul vaccinated against polio, since clinics in their district had shut down without warning due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The nationwide lockdowns were yet to be announced, but Herat Province — which shares a bustling border with Iran, a country hit hard by the pandemic — was also reeling toward a crisis.

        “When we first came to the Herat 100-bed hospital, the main gate was shut because of coronavirus and they didn’t let people enter,” Saidgul’s father, Anargul, told Undark. “We returned later but they told us they weren’t letting anyone inside because of coronavirus.”...
