    Polio virus: Samples test negative for local transmission across country

    PESHAWAR:
    Efforts to eradicate poliovirus from the country accelerated soon after International Health Regulations (IHR) proposed restriction on movement of Pakistan nationals and made it mandatory for every citizen to carry polio certificates.

    Soon after, officials concerned held repeated meetings to prepare strategies to tackle the situation. Authorities planned scheduled as well as unscheduled polio drives and set 2016 as the year of exterminating poliovirus from the country.

    The diligence seems to have paid off as officials dealing with polio eradication informed samples collected from different sites across the country were sent to National Institute of Health (NIH) and laboratory results confirmed that reservoirs were free of poliovirus...

      Another polio case surfaced from Bannu district on Saturday, bringing the number of cases reported this year in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to seven. The victim has been identified as six-year-old Sohema.

        ISLAMABAD: The first polio case of the high transmission season has been reported from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, bringing the polio case count for this year to 12.

        The case was confirmed by the National Institute of Health?s Polio Virology Laboratory. A one year old child, whose sample was received by the lab three weeks ago, has died.

        The poliovirus is less active during the low transmission season from September to May due to lower temperatures, while June to August is known as the high transmission season...

            Polio eradication official shot dead in Peshawar

            PESHAWAR: Gunmen on a motorbike shot dead a senior member of the polio eradication campaign in northwest of the country, police said on Sunday, in the latest attack on immunisation teams by extremists.

            Attempts to eradicate polio in Pakistan have been hit by militant attacks on inoculation teams that have claimed more than 100 lives since December 2012.

            Doctor Zakaullah Khan, a seasoned member of Peshawar's polio vaccination campaign, was killed late Saturday when gunmen on a motorbike opened fire near his house, a senior police official told AFP.

            Imtiaz Ahmad, a provincial spokesman for the immunisation campaign, also confirmed the killing.

            Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, a splinter group of the Tehrik-i-Taliban on Sunday claimed responsibility for the attack. In a statement, sent to AFP, the group's spokesman Ehsanullah Ehsan vowed to carry out more attacks...

              Another polio case detected in Sujawal

              HYDERABAD:
              An eight-year-old became the latest victim of the polio virus in a coastal village of Sujawal district, making it the fifth case of the crippling virus in the province this year.

              Azeem Pathan, son of Abdul Rehman Pathan, is a native of a village in Khothi union council in Jati taluka.

              Coordinator of the Emergency Operation Centre for Polio Fayaz Jatoi told The Express Tribune, ?The child was given three doses of polio vaccine [at different times]. Unfortunately, he couldn?t develop immunity.?

                  PESHAWAR (Dunya News) ? A policeman guarding polio workers on the second day of a vaccination campaign was killed in a roadside blast in Peshawar today (Tuesday).

                          In a short span of less than two months, the second polio case has been detected in Badin district.

                          Seven-year-old Imran Jat tested positive for polio on Tuesday.                             KARACHI: Pakistan?s polio eradication efforts faced another setback on Wednesday when a child in Sindh?s Badin district was tested positive for the disease, taking the number of cases reported this year in the province to eight and in the country overall to 19.

                            A spokesperson for the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) Sindh said six-year old Imran Javed in Badin had tested positive for polio and an investigation was under way.

                            He added that it was the third polio case reported in the coastal belt of Sindh during the last two months...
